Baggage

Standard carry-on baggage rules apply to Garuda passengers: typically, this is one piece weighing up to 7 kg, with dimensions that allow it to be placed in the overhead bin. In addition, one small personal item is permitted, such as a laptop bag, a handbag, or a walking stick. It is strictly forbidden to bring dangerous items or liquids in containers exceeding 100 ml into the cabin.

Checked baggage allowances depend on your fare and class of service. Economy class usually includes one piece weighing up to 20–30 kg, while business and first-class passengers can expect increased limits of up to 40 kg or more. We strongly recommend checking the exact limits on your ticket before departure, as they may vary depending on the specific route.

If your baggage exceeds the established norms, payment for excess weight is made at the current airport rates. Special favorable conditions often apply to sports equipment, such as surfboards or golf sets, and many flights offer free transportation of one piece of sports equipment over the main allowance. To ensure the safety of your belongings, we recommend using durable covers and securely packing fragile items.

Pet Rules

Cabin Transportation

Garuda has strict requirements for transporting animals in the cabin. Generally, only small pets whose total weight, including the carrier, does not exceed 7 kg are allowed. The container must be ventilated, securely closed, and fit completely under the seat in front of you. Please note that the number of spaces for animals on board is limited, so the service must be booked in advance.

Transportation in the Cargo Hold

Larger animals are transported in a special heated section of the cargo hold. The container must comply with IATA standards: be spacious enough for the animal to stand and turn around, have a secure lock, and an absorbent lining. The weight and dimensions of the container directly affect the total cost of transportation, which is paid as excess baggage.

Required Documents and Restrictions

  • International veterinary passport.
  • Health certificate and a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
  • Compliance with the quarantine rules of the destination country and possession of all import permits.

There are restrictions on transporting brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats), as they do not tolerate pressure changes and heat well. Seasonal restrictions on transporting animals in the cargo hold may also apply depending on weather conditions. To clarify all details and confirm the possibility of transportation, be sure to contact the airline's support before purchasing a ticket.

Loyalty Program

GarudaMiles

GarudaMiles is the official loyalty program for frequent flyers, designed to make your travels even more pleasant and rewarding. Participation in the program is completely free, and registration is available online on the airline's website.

Services

Passengers are offered a choice of several service classes, each ensuring a high level of comfort. Economy Class features comfortable seats with adjustable headrests. In Business Class, passengers can expect seats that recline into a full bed and an exquisite menu. First Class with individual suites and personal steward service is also available on certain aircraft types.

A modern entertainment system is available on board, offering a wide selection of movies, music, and games on individual screens. Depending on the aircraft type and route, Wi-Fi may be available. Meals on flights comply with halal standards and include both Indonesian and international cuisine. You can also pre-order special meals (vegetarian, gluten-free, or children's).

Special attention is given to families with children: baby bassinets and entertainment kits for little ones are provided on board. Assistance during boarding and disembarking is available for passengers with disabilities, and the unaccompanied minor service allows parents to be confident in the safety of children traveling alone without adults.

Destinations

Garuda connects the largest cities in Indonesia with international capitals, offering passengers convenient connections and a wide selection of flights. The main hub of the entire route network is Jakarta, from where flights regularly depart to popular metropolises such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

For those planning a holiday on the beaches or exploring ancient monuments, the carrier offers frequent flights to Denpasar (Bali) and Yogyakarta. The network also covers important administrative and economic centers, including Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, Semarang, Palembang, and Balikpapan.

Booking Tips

To purchase tickets at the most favorable price, we recommend starting your search at least 2–3 months before your planned departure date. The best offers often appear in the middle of the week, especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Keep an eye out for seasonal sales on the official website so you don't miss the chance to save on flights during the high season.

Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and allows you to select the most comfortable seats in the cabin in advance. Early registration via the website or mobile app is a great way to avoid airport queues and guarantee comfortable seating, especially if you are traveling in a large group or with the whole family.

Using the official mobile app provides access to exclusive fares and allows you to manage your booking efficiently. Also, do not forget the option of taking out travel insurance during the ticket purchase: this will provide additional protection in case of flight delays or baggage loss during your journey.

History

The history of Garuda began in 1947 when it was founded under the initial name KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf. With Indonesia's independence, the carrier became a national symbol and received its modern name in honor of the mythical sacred bird. The first scheduled flights laid a solid foundation for the development of civil aviation throughout the region.

Over the decades, the company has systematically expanded its geography, opening Indonesia to the rest of the world. A major milestone was the opening of the first international routes, which connected the archipelago with Europe, Asia, and Australia. Gradually, the company transformed from a regional player into a global carrier, recognized in all corners of the planet.

The fleet's evolution has gone from classic propeller planes to the most modern wide-body liners. Each new aircraft type brought an increase in comfort and safety levels, corresponding to the strictest global trends. Particular attention has always been paid to crew training and the implementation of advanced navigation technologies.

In 2014, the airline officially joined the SkyTeam global alliance, which was recognition of its compliance with the highest international service standards. Today, the carrier continues to implement technological innovations and sustainable development programs, striving to make air travel more environmentally friendly and comfortable for future generations of travelers.
