Baggage

Baggage allowances on Lufthansa flights are flexibly adapted to the needs of various traveler categories and depend on the selected fare and class of service. For an accurate calculation of the allowed weight, it is recommended to use the Free baggage online service when booking your ticket.

Carry-on baggage: In Economy Class and Premium Economy, 1 piece weighing up to 8 kg is allowed. Business and First Class passengers are allowed 2 pieces of 8 kg each. Standard dimensions must not exceed 55x40x23 cm. Additionally, a small personal item (handbag or laptop case) up to 30x40x10 cm can be taken into the cabin.

Checked baggage: Allowances vary from no included baggage in the Economy Light fare to generous limits in premium classes. Classic Economy usually includes 1 piece up to 23 kg, Business Class includes 2 pieces up to 32 kg, and First Class includes up to 3 pieces up to 32 kg. On intercontinental routes, rules may expand depending on the destination.

Excess and special baggage: Transportation of sports equipment (skis, surfboards) or musical instruments requires prior coordination. If your baggage exceeds the established weight or size limits, an additional fee is charged, the amount of which depends on the route. Lufthansa recommends paying for extra pieces in advance via the website—it is significantly cheaper than at the airport check-in desk.

Prohibited items: For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden to transport explosives, flammable liquids, and dangerous chemicals. Low-power batteries and power banks are allowed in carry-on baggage only. For travel convenience, we advise labeling suitcases with tags containing your contact details and using reliable locks.

Pet Rules

Lufthansa airline takes care of passengers traveling with pets, offering safe conditions for animal transportation both in the aircraft cabin and in a specialized baggage compartment.

Transportation in the Cabin

  • Only small dogs and cats are allowed.
  • The maximum weight of the animal including its carrier is 8 kg.
  • The container dimensions must not exceed 55x40x23 cm; the carrier must be soft, waterproof, and allow the pet to stand and turn around.
  • The animal must remain in the carrier under the seat in front of you throughout the entire flight.

Transportation in the Baggage Compartment

  • Animals whose weight with the container exceeds 8 kg are transported in a heated cargo hold.
  • The container must comply with IATA standards (hard shell, secure lock, ventilation on four sides).
  • It is important to provide the pet with sufficient water; feeding the animal immediately before the flight is not recommended.

Documents and Preparation

  • An international veterinary passport, microchip, and up-to-date rabies vaccinations are mandatory.
  • Specific certificates and antibody tests may be required for entry into certain countries.
  • It is necessary to book a space for the animal at least 72 hours before departure, as the number of pet spaces on a flight is limited.

Restrictions and Costs

The cost of transportation depends on the route and the method of transport (cabin or baggage). Please note restrictions for brachycephalic breeds (dogs and cats with flat faces, such as pugs or Persian cats): due to the risk of breathing problems during stress or heat, their transportation may be restricted or prohibited. Before planning your trip, be sure to contact the Lufthansa service center to confirm the possibility of transporting your pet.

Booking Tips

To make your journey with Lufthansa as profitable and comfortable as possible, it is worth considering a few practical booking tips. The best ticket prices are usually available when purchasing 2–3 months before departure. It is recommended to use the official Lufthansa website or mobile app, where exclusive fares and special offers for loyalty program members often appear.

Fare and Seat Selection: When booking, carefully study the fare conditions. For example, Economy Light is suitable for those traveling light, while Flex fares allow changing travel dates without penalties. Choosing a standard seat in Economy Class may incur a fee, but seats with Extra Legroom are definitely worth the surcharge on long flights. In Business and First Class, seat selection is always included in the price.

Online Check-in: Flight check-in opens 23 hours before departure. We strongly recommend checking in during the first hours to have a better choice of seats and save time at the airport. Using the mobile app, you will receive an electronic boarding pass, which eliminates the need to print paper documents at most airports worldwide.

Useful Extras: Don't forget to arrange travel insurance, which will cover unforeseen expenses in case of flight delays or medical needs. Subscribing to the Lufthansa newsletter will allow you to be the first to know about sales and new destinations, making your flights even more affordable.

History

The history of Lufthansa is a chronicle of the formation of civil aviation in Europe. Although the modern company Deutsche Lufthansa AG in its current legal form was founded in 1953, its roots go back to 1926, when the first "Lufthansa" emerged from the merger of two German aviation enterprises. Since then, the brand has become synonymous with reliability and progress in the sky.

In the mid-1950s, the airline resumed scheduled flights, quickly restoring its status as Germany's national carrier. A landmark milestone was entering the jet age: the adoption of new aircraft types allowed for a significant expansion of flight geography, opening non-stop flights across the ocean. Gradually, the Lufthansa Group formed around the company, eventually including well-known carriers such as the Vienna-based Austrian Airlines and Swiss.

A major event in recent history was the creation of Star Alliance in 1997—the first and largest global aviation alliance in the world. Lufthansa acted as one of the five co-founders of this union, which forever changed the standards of international service and connection convenience for passengers. This allowed the company to offer unified service standards on flights worldwide.

Today, Lufthansa continues to innovate, focusing on digitalization and environmental sustainability. The company actively invests in biofuel development and purchases the latest aircraft with low noise and emission levels. Having traveled the path from wooden biplanes of the 20s to ultra-modern Airbuses, the airline remains true to its main goal—connecting people and continents with impeccable quality.
