Pet Travel Guide
CM Airlines understands that pets are part of the family and welcomes them on board their flights across Honduras and the region. However, because the airline operates smaller turboprop aircraft, space is strictly limited, and specific regulations apply to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers and animals. It is essential to review these guidelines carefully before booking your trip to destinations like Roatan or San Pedro Sula.
Transport Options
In Cabin (Carry-on)
Small pets can travel with you in the cabin, provided they remain in their carrier throughout the flight. This option is subject to space availability as the number of pets allowed per flight is limited.
- Carrier Dimensions: The carrier must fit comfortably under the seat in front of you. Soft-sided carriers are generally preferred for their flexibility.
- Weight Limits: Strict weight limits apply for the combined weight of the pet and the carrier. Animals exceeding this limit will not be permitted in the cabin.
- Allowed Pet Types: Generally restricted to domestic dogs and cats.
- Limit per Passenger: Typically, one pet carrier is allowed per adult passenger.
- Placement: The carrier must be safely stowed under the seat during takeoff, landing, and turbulence.
In Cargo Hold (Checked Baggage)
Animals that exceed the weight or size limits for the cabin must travel in the cargo hold. The hold is pressurized, but temperature changes can occur, so this option requires careful preparation.
- Container Requirements: Pets must travel in an IATA-approved rigid plastic or fiberglass kennel. Wire cages are generally not accepted.
- Construction: The crate must have a secure locking mechanism, a solid leak-proof floor, and adequate ventilation on all four sides.
- Size Limits: The pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally. Due to the cargo door size of regional aircraft, very large crates may not be accepted.
- Documentation: A "Live Animal" sticker and clear feeding instructions should be affixed to the crate.
As Cargo (For Large Animals)
For very large animals or unaccompanied pets, you may need to book through the airline's cargo department rather than as checked baggage.
- When Required: If the crate dimensions exceed standard baggage door limits or if the animal is traveling alone.
- Booking Procedure: Arrangements must be made well in advance through the CM Airlines cargo office.
- Special Requirements: Additional paperwork and specific drop-off times at the cargo terminal will apply.
Required Documentation
To avoid delays at the airport, ensure you have all necessary paperwork ready for inspection at the check-in counter.
- Veterinary Health Certificate: A valid certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian is required (check the official website for validity timeframes).
- Vaccination Card: Proof of current vaccinations, specifically a valid Rabies vaccination certificate.
- Import/Export Permits: For international flights to cities like Guatemala City or Tegucigalpa, you must comply with the specific customs and agricultural regulations of the destination country.
- Copies: It is recommended to bring two sets of copies of all documents (one for the airline, one for your records).
Service Costs
Transporting a pet incurs an additional fee, which is separate from your checked baggage allowance. These fees are payable at the airport.
- In-Cabin Fee: A fixed fee applies per segment for domestic and international flights.
- Cargo Hold Fee: Charges vary based on the weight of the animal and the crate, as well as the route.
- International Fees: Expect higher rates for international sectors compared to domestic routes. Please check the official CM Airlines website for the most current pricing structure.
Preparation Tips
Preparing your pet for the journey is crucial for a stress-free experience on these regional flights.
- Acclimatization: Let your pet get used to their carrier or crate several days before the flight.
- Feeding: Feed your pet a light meal a few hours before departure to prevent motion sickness; keep them hydrated but avoid leaving a full water bowl in the crate to prevent spills.
- Exercise: Ensure your dog has had plenty of exercise before arriving at the airport to help them sleep during the flight.
- Identification: Attach a tag with your name, flight number, and phone number to the collar and the crate.
Restrictions
For safety reasons, CM Airlines enforces specific restrictions on certain animals and breeds.
- Prohibited Breeds: Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dog and cat breeds may be restricted or require a signed liability release due to respiratory risks at altitude.
- Aggressive Behavior: The airline reserves the right to refuse transport to any animal showing aggressive behavior.
- Age Restrictions: Minimum age requirements apply for puppies and kittens to ensure they are healthy enough to travel.
- Service Animals: Recognized service dogs may travel in the cabin, often free of charge, but require prior notification and valid documentation.
Important: Pet travel rules are subject to change based on aircraft type and weather conditions. We strongly recommend contacting CM Airlines directly via WhatsApp or email at least 48 hours before your flight to confirm your reservation, verify specific weight limits, and ensure space availability for your pet.
