General Weather Overview

Esquel's climate can be described as cool and temperate, with a distinct influence from the Patagonian Andes. A fresh and invigorating atmosphere reigns here: even at the height of summer, there is no sweltering heat, making this city in Argentina an ideal destination for active tourism. Overall, the weather here is quite dry in terms of precipitation volume, but travellers should always have warm clothing on hand, as nights can be cold at any time of the year.

Seasonality in Esquel is very clearly defined. Summer, which lasts from December to February, delights with the most comfortable conditions: daytime temperatures reach +19…+20°C, and rain falls extremely rarely. Winter (from June to August), on the contrary, is cold and harsh: the thermometer often drops below zero, especially at night, creating conditions for frost and snowfall. Spring and autumn serve as cool transitional periods.

An interesting feature of the local climate is the nature of the precipitation. Although the overall level in millimetres remains low throughout the year, the number of cloudy and damp days rises sharply during the winter period. From May to August, the sky is often overcast, and precipitation falls frequently, but in small amounts. In summer, clear days prevail, allowing one to fully enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Temperature

The climate in Esquel is characterized by distinct seasonality, typical of Patagonia, with cool summers and quite cold winters. The warmest period falls in January and February, when the average air temperature is around 13–14°C. During these months, the air warms up during the day to a comfortable 19–20°C, which is ideal for long walks, as there is no exhausting heat here. However, it is worth noting that even in summer, nights remain cool, with temperatures around 7°C.

The winter season, lasting from June to August, brings frost to the region. The coldest month is July, when the average temperature drops to -0.2°C. Night frosts at this time are a common occurrence: the thermometer often falls to -3°C, and during the day, the air rarely warms up above 3–4°C. This time of year requires serious preparation and warm clothing, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors.

A characteristic feature of the weather in Esquel is significant daily temperature fluctuations, which are most noticeable in the warm season. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can exceed 12–13 degrees, so layered clothing will be relevant at any time of the year. The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, are also quite cool: in April and October, average daily figures hover around 10–11°C, dropping quickly after sunset.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Esquel is distributed unevenly throughout the year, demonstrating quite clear seasonality. The summer months, especially January and February, are the driest: minimum moisture is recorded during this period, and it rains on average only 5–6 days a month. This makes summer the most favourable and stable time for tourism and long walks in the fresh air.

The situation changes drastically with the onset of cold weather. The period from May to August is characterized by increased humidity and frequent overcast weather. June is considered the "wettest" month of the year: precipitation can fall up to 18 days a month. Since the average temperature in winter hovers around zero, and drops to -3°C at night, it often snows here instead of raining, creating excellent conditions for winter sports in the region.

The transitional seasons — spring and autumn — are distinguished by a moderate frequency of precipitation but remain quite damp compared to summer. For example, in April and May, as well as in September, the number of days with precipitation varies from 12 to 14. Travellers planning a visit to Esquel in the off-season are recommended to have warm waterproof clothing with them, as clear weather can quickly change to drizzle or snowfall.

What to Pack

Esquel is distinguished by a rather cool climate, so the main rule when packing a suitcase will be the principle of layering. Even if you are travelling at the height of the local summer (January and February), when the daytime temperature can reach a comfortable +20°C, evenings and nights remain cold, with temperatures around +7°C. Therefore, in addition to light items, be sure to take a warm sweater, a fleece jacket, and trousers. Also, do not forget sunscreen and sunglasses, as the sun in Patagonia is very active.

In winter (from June to August), the weather becomes truly harsh: the thermometer often drops below zero, and during the day hardly exceeds the +3°C mark. For this season, a full set of warm clothing is necessary: high-quality thermal underwear, a down jacket, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Since the number of days with precipitation in winter increases significantly (up to 16–18 days a month), ensure that your outerwear has water-repellent properties.

Regardless of the time of year, for walking around the surroundings of Esquel, you will need comfortable, broken-in trekking shoes with non-slip soles. Given the likelihood of windy weather, instead of an umbrella, it is more practical to take a good raincoat or a windproof shell jacket. In spring and autumn, the weather is changeable, so a light hat and scarf may come in handy even during these transitional periods.
