Imagine a spacious open area surrounded by majestic buildings made of black and pink tuff — this is Vardanants Square, the heart of the city of Gyumri. As the largest square in the second-largest city of Armenia, it serves not only as a transportation hub but also as the primary venue for gatherings and celebrations.

The centerpiece of this architectural ensemble is the impressive Vardan Mamikonian Memorial. This bronze sculpture group, installed in 2008, is dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Avarayr. Five figures, led by Vardan on horseback, symbolize the unbreakable spirit of the people. The square has a strict rectangular shape and is decorated with cascading fountains that provide coolness on summer days.
The perimeter of the square is adorned with iconic landmarks: the Church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin), popularly known as "Seven Wounds", and the Church of the Holy Savior (currently under restoration). Also located here are the City Hall building and the legendary October Cinema, whose facade is a striking example of Soviet architecture infused with national character.
