Eastern Beach

About

Located on the picturesque shores of Corio Bay, Eastern Beach is a true gem that graces the city of Geelong. It is not just a place to swim, but a unique Art Deco architectural complex built in the 1930s. The main feature of this location is the giant shark-proof sea bath, which covers more than 3.4 hectares and can accommodate thousands of holidaymakers at once.

This part of Australia is famous for its hospitality and family-friendly atmosphere. Unlike the rough ocean beaches, visitors here find calm waters and a gentle slope, making it ideal for families with children. The complex features historic changing pavilions and the famous Beach House restaurant, and the buildings themselves are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The Baywalk promenade adds a special charm, lined with the famous painted wooden bollards. Each figure tells its own story, creating a unique character for the waterfront and turning a simple stroll by the water into a fascinating encounter with local culture and history.

What to Do

At Eastern Beach, there is something for everyone, from active swimming to serene nature watching. Visitors can take a dip in the cool waters of the protected sea bath or spend time in the dedicated children's pool. A walk along the restored wooden boardwalk that circles the swimming area allows you to admire the perfect symmetry of the Art Deco architecture and the endless horizon of the bay.

All the conditions for a family holiday are here: a gentle sandy shore, playgrounds, and even a classic vintage carousel located nearby. Those with an active lifestyle will appreciate the bike paths along the waterfront, while those looking for vibrant impressions can head to the famous bollards — painted wooden sculptures that have become a symbol of Geelong.

If you're lucky enough to be here during festivals or concerts, such as "Carols by the Bay," you'll be immersed in a truly festive atmosphere. After a busy day, be sure to visit the local cafes or have a picnic on the grass to watch the sun slowly set over the waters of Corio Bay. For the more adventurous, a diving tower has been restored on the beach, becoming a legendary feature of this historic area.

Getting There

Picturesque Eastern Beach is located in the heart of the city on the shores of Corio Bay, making it very easy to reach. If you are traveling from Melbourne, the drive via the M1 freeway takes about an hour (the distance is approximately 75 km). Parking spaces for private vehicles are provided near the beach area.

For those who prefer public transport, the ideal option is to take a train or bus to Geelong Station. From the station, the waterfront is just a 15–20 minute walk, or you can take a local bus to Brougham Street. Trams used to run here, but today they have been replaced by convenient cycling and walking paths.

The walk along the waterfront from Yarra Street to Limeburners Point is a pleasant journey in itself, allowing you to enjoy the sea air and views of the bay. Alternatively, you can always use a local taxi to reach the beach from anywhere in the city in just a few minutes.

History & Facts

It’s hard to believe, but at the beginning of the 20th century, the area of today's Eastern Beach was considered quite an unsightly, rugged, and neglected place. A massive transformation began in 1914 when city authorities planned an ambitious project: building a 1.5-kilometer sea wall and leveling the rocky shore. Actual work started in 1927, and the grand opening of the first terraces and changing rooms took place in December 1929.

The highlight of the complex — the famous shark-protected sea bath and children’s pool — was officially opened on March 28, 1939, by Mayor Solomon Jacobs. At the time, the project cost the city a staggering £40,000. In the 1940s, the area's popularity was so high that a tram line was even extended here, which remained in operation until 1956.

After a period of relative decline in the 1960s–80s, when tourists shifted to ocean beaches, Eastern Beach experienced a rebirth. A major restoration began in 1993. The pool, wooden boardwalks, and the historic kiosk building were fully restored. This renovation gave a massive boost to the development of the entire Geelong waterfront, turning it into a modern and stylish space.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy your time at Eastern Beach, it is usually recommended that visitors set aside 2 to 4 hours. This is plenty of time for a leisurely swim in the sea bath, some sunbathing, and a pleasant stroll along the shore on the famous Baywalk.

If your visit coincides with one of the local festivals or if you plan to have a long lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants overlooking the bay, you should allocate half a day. Evening is the perfect time for sunset watching, which can add another unforgettable hour to your visit.

Working Hours

As a public space and part of the city's waterfront, Eastern Beach is open to visitors 24/7. You can come here early in the morning to watch the sunrise or take a stroll along the lit promenade late in the evening.

However, the operation of supporting facilities such as food kiosks, restaurants, and changing pavilions depends on the season and daylight hours. Generally, during the summer, they are open from early morning until sunset. Before your trip, it is recommended to check the current operating hours of specific establishments on official state tourism portals.
