General Weather Overview

Merimbula, located on Australia's picturesque coast, welcomes travellers with a mild oceanic climate. The weather here is distinguished by enviable consistency and a lack of extreme temperatures: sweltering heat or severe cold are rare here. Thanks to the ocean's influence, the climate remains temperate and comfortable for visiting at any time of year, allowing you to enjoy walks and nature without unnecessary stress on the body.

Summer in this region lasts from December to February and delights with pleasant warmth, when the daytime temperature averages +23…+24°C. This is an excellent time for a beach holiday, however, it is worth being prepared for the fact that rainy days happen quite often during this season. Winter (from June to August), on the contrary, is drier in terms of rainfall but cooler: during the day the air warms up to +14…+15°C, while nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures around +6°C.

The transitional seasons — spring and autumn — pass smoothly. March still retains summer warmth, remaining one of the most comfortable months for a visit, whereas by May it becomes noticeably cooler. Overall, Merimbula is a destination for those who value stable, mild weather and want to avoid sharp climatic contrasts.

Temperature

The climate in Merimbula is characterised by mildness and a lack of extreme temperature fluctuations, making the city attractive to visit at any time of year. The summer season, which lasts from December to February in Australia, delights with pleasant warmth without sweltering heat. The hottest month is usually January with an average daily maximum of about 24.4°C. This time is ideal for a beach holiday: it is warm enough during the day for swimming and sunbathing, and nights remain comfortable with temperatures around 16°C, allowing for excellent sleep.

Winter months (June, July, and August) bring coolness, however, there are no severe frosts here. The coldest month is considered to be July, when the average temperature holds at the level of 10.1°C. During the day, the air usually warms up to 14°C, which is quite comfortable for walks in light outerwear, but nights become truly brisk: the thermometer can drop to 6°C. Travellers planning a trip during this period should definitely take warm clothes for evening promenades.

Throughout the year, Merimbula observes a stable amplitude between day and night temperatures, averaging about 8–9 degrees. Spring and autumn are characterised by smooth transitions: for example, in April and October, daytime highs reach a comfortable 19°C, creating wonderful conditions for excursions and active recreation in nature, when it is no longer cold, but not yet hot.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Merimbula falls unevenly throughout the year, demonstrating a noticeable dependence on the season. Analysing weather statistics, one can distinguish a wetter warm period and a relatively dry cool season. Snow in this coastal Australian city is an extremely rare phenomenon, so when speaking of precipitation, we almost always imply rain.

The highest frequency of rains is observed in late spring and summer. The "wettest" months by the number of inclement days are December and January, when precipitation can fall up to 15 days a month. November is also distinguished by high humidity with a figure of about 14 rainy days. However, despite the frequency, the total volume of precipitation remains moderate, which often indicates the short-term nature of the rains.

The dry season in Merimbula falls on late autumn, winter, and the beginning of spring. From May to September, the number of rainy days drops by half — to approximately 7–8 days per month. According to statistics, June, July, and August look particularly dry, when the probability of precipitation is minimal. This time of year is excellent for those who prefer clear weather, although air temperatures during these months will be lower than in summer.

What to Pack

When packing for Merimbula, it is worth considering the mild coastal climate of this Australian resort. In summer (from December to February), it is warm here, but not exhaustingly hot: during the day the temperature stays around +20...+24°C. Light items made from natural fabrics, shorts, and t-shirts, as well as swimwear, are perfect for this season. Be sure to put high SPF sunscreen, a hat, and quality sunglasses in your suitcase — UV radiation is very active here. Given that there are quite a few rainy days in summer, do not forget a light raincoat or a compact umbrella.

If your trip is planned for the cool season (from June to August), when the temperature can drop to +6°C at night and rise only to +14°C during the day, you will need warmer clothing. It is best to use the layering principle: take jeans, fleece jackets, and a windproof jacket to protect against the ocean breeze. At any time of year, comfortable, proven footwear, such as trainers or trekking boots, will come in handy for walks around the picturesque surroundings and national parks.
