Getting There

The historic Charles Sturt Hotel building is located at 77 East St, in the very heart of the town. Narrandera is situated approximately 540 kilometers southwest of Sydney, serving as a gateway to the picturesque Riverina agricultural region, famous for its orchards and rice fields.

The most convenient way to get here is by car via the main highways of New South Wales. The town is also connected to other regions by a railway that reached here as early as 1881. From the local station, the hotel is an easy walk or just a few minutes by taxi, as the pub occupies a central position in the town's layout.

History & Facts

The hotel is a true icon of the town and was managed by the Duncan family for 78 years. In the past, it was officially named the Mail Hotel, but locals grew accustomed to calling it simply "Duncan’s" or "Dunc’s." The original building was tragically destroyed by fire in the 1950s, after which the Tooths Brewery rebuilt it in its current two-story form and gave it its modern name.

The establishment proudly bears the name of the British officer and famous explorer Charles Sturt. In 1829–1830, he led a dangerous expedition down the Murrumbidgee River. In April 1830, his party reached the vicinity of modern-day Narrandera; the expedition members were extremely exhausted, but were saved by the timely arrival of reinforcements with supplies. Although Sturt temporarily lost his sight due to the hardships of the journey, his discoveries opened this region for future settlers.

Interestingly, today in the town, which was founded in 1863 on the lands of the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people, only two of the five historic pubs remain operational. The current owners maintain the traditions of hospitality, upholding the hotel's status as the primary venue for significant local celebrations and gatherings of generations.

For those stopping by to soak up the atmosphere of a classic Australian pub, have lunch in the bistro, or enjoy a cold drink in the beer garden, 1–3 hours will be quite sufficient. This is enough time to appreciate the interior and chat with the locals.
