The climate of Thimphu, nestled in a picturesque Himalayan valley at an altitude of about 2,400 meters, is classified as subtropical monsoon. Bhutan's capital is characterized by distinct seasonality: a dry, bracing winter gives way to a humid and moderately warm summer. The mountainous terrain reliably protects the city from extremely cold air masses, yet the significant elevation results in noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations.

Throughout the year, the weather shifts from a mild and blossoming spring to a period of heavy summer rains. The average annual temperature in the region is around +13.6°C, making it a pleasant destination year-round with the right wardrobe. Autumn in these parts is considered the "golden season" thanks to consistently clear weather and excellent visibility of the mountain ranges.

The temperature range in Thimphu is highly dependent on the time of day and the position of the sun. The coldest month is January, when average nighttime temperatures drop to -4.3°C. In winter, the air in Bhutan is very dry and clear, contributing to sharp fluctuations: it can reach around +12°C under direct sunlight during the day, but as dusk falls, the temperature instantly drops below freezing.

The summer period, peaking in August, is characterized by mild warmth. The average daytime temperature during this time is about +17.2°C, although on some days the air can warm up to +25°C. Mountain nights remain cool and fresh even at the height of summer, providing pleasant relief. Spring and autumn offer moderate and stable temperatures, creating ideal conditions for hiking and sightseeing.

Snow rarely falls in the valley itself and usually melts during the day, although the surrounding peaks remain capped in white throughout the winter, creating a magnificent contrast with the city's dry landscapes.

When planning your wardrobe for a trip to Thimphu, you should follow the principle of layering. Due to the high altitude, the sun here is extremely intense, so even on cool days, you will certainly need sunscreen and sunglasses. If your visit falls during winter (December–February), bring warm thermal underwear, a high-quality down jacket, and gloves, as nighttime frosts in Bhutan are common.

For a summer trip, a reliable raincoat and umbrella capable of withstanding monsoon downpours are critical. Footwear should be comfortable and preferably waterproof, especially if you plan to visit monasteries located on high ground.
