What to Do

Everyone will find something to enjoy here: from lazy sunbathing to actively exploring the underwater world. The emerald waters of the bay are perfect for snorkeling—the water's clarity allows you to see schools of bright fish and the rich marine flora of the Green Coast. For families with children, the shallow and safe entry into the sea is a pleasant bonus.

Active recreation enthusiasts can enjoy water skiing, windsurfing, or jet skiing. Yacht clubs are located near the beach, where you can rent a boat or book an excursion to the many uninhabited islands of Ilha Grande Bay. Beach volleyball matches are often held on the shore, and anyone is welcome to join.

As the sun begins to set, the beach's atmosphere transforms. This is the best time to grab a table at one of the seaside bars, order a refreshing caipirinha, and try dishes made from the freshest seafood. In the evening, live music often plays here, immersing guests in the atmosphere of a true Brazilian celebration to the sound of the surf.

Getting There

For travelers coming from Rio de Janeiro, the journey is about 155 km. The most convenient option is to take a comfortable Costa Verde bus (departing from the Novo Rio terminal); the trip takes about 2.5–3 hours. You can also rent a car and drive along the scenic BR-101 highway, enjoying the ocean views.

Taxis and Uber services are very active within the city, allowing you to reach the beach quickly from any neighborhood. For those arriving by sea on a yacht or as part of a cruise, Costeirinha Beach offers direct access from the bay, making it a popular stop for sailors.

History & Facts

The history of this coastline began during the Age of Discovery. On January 6, 1502, a Portuguese expedition led by Gonçalo Coelho entered these waters. Since the discovery coincided with the Feast of the Epiphany (Three Kings' Day), the bay was given the majestic name Angra dos Reis, which means "Kings' Bay."

Starting from the mid-16th century, the first permanent settlements began to appear here. Due to the bay's protection from strong storms, the area around Costeirinha Beach became an important port hub. Sugarcane and coffee plantations flourished along the shores, and the coastal culture was shaped by Portuguese traditions and the grand architecture of the monasteries being built.

Interestingly, in past centuries, neighboring islands like the famous Ilha Grande often served as hideouts for pirates. Legends of shipwrecks and buried treasures still give this region an aura of romance and mystery. For centuries, Costeirinha Beach remained a witness to the development of fishing and maritime trade, maintaining its status as a vital part of the city's daily life.

Time Needed

To fully soak in the atmosphere of this place, a typical tourist will need about 2 to 4 hours for a visit. This is enough time to swim in the warm waters, take vibrant photos against the backdrop of the cliffs, and simply relax on the warm sand.

If you plan to combine beach relaxation with a visit to the local fish market or lunch at one of the seaside restaurants, it's better to set aside half a day. For those renting a boat for a trip to the nearby islands, the beach can be an excellent starting or ending point for a full-day adventure.

Working Hours

Costeirinha Beach welcomes visitors at any time. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (Monday to Sunday). This allows guests to come here for early morning swims at dawn as well as for romantic walks under the Brazilian starlight.
