Museu Mariano Procópio

About

In the picturesque city of Juiz de Fora lies one of the most significant cultural treasures that Brazil is rightfully proud of — the Mariano Procópio Museum. Founded in 1915 by collector Alfredo Ferreira Lage, it was the first museum in the state of Minas Gerais. The complex combines a 19th-century historical villa and a modern building, surrounded by a magnificent English-style park.

This site impresses with the scale of its collection: the funds house more than 50,000 exhibits. Here, you can see not only masterpieces of European and Brazilian painting but also unique relics of the imperial family and extensive natural science collections. The museum is considered the first building in Latin America designed specifically to house museum funds, making it an architectural monument of global significance.

A special atmosphere is created by Parque Mariano Procópio, whose landscape was designed by the famous French architect Auguste François Marie Glaziou. After a long restoration completed in 2023, the museum has reopened its doors to visitors, offering an exciting journey into the empire's past and an introduction to the country's rich natural heritage.

What to Do

Visitors can encounter the country's imperial past: the halls display furniture, personal belongings of monarchs, and even a 19th-century Erard piano once played by Princess Isabel. Art lovers will appreciate canvases by masters such as Pedro Américo (including his famous work "Tiradentes Quartered"), Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Charles-François Daubigny.

Science enthusiasts should check out the natural history rooms. The collection includes over a thousand minerals, rare fossils, and zoological specimens, including a taxidermied jaguar and maned wolf. The museum also preserves unique historical documents, such as the personal correspondence of Emperor Dom Pedro I with the Marquise of Santos.

After exploring the exhibits, be sure to stroll through the shaded paths of the park. The gardens, with their ponds and exotic plants, are a perfect spot for photos and quiet relaxation. Temporary exhibitions and educational programs are often held for guests, offering a fresh perspective on the history of the city and country.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked with the Ferreira Lage family. The head of the family, engineer Mariano Procópio Ferreira Lage, became famous for building Brazil's first highway, the "União e Indústria." It was he who built the magnificent Villa Ferreira Lage, which was originally intended to host Emperor Dom Pedro II during his visits to the region.

In 1915, the engineer's son, Alfredo Ferreira Lage, transformed the family legacy into a private museum, opening the unique collection to the public. The official museum building (Edifício Mariano Procópio) was inaugurated in 1921 to mark the centenary of Mariano Procópio's birth. The significance of this event was highlighted by a visit from Princess Isabel and the Count d'Eu.

Having no heirs, Alfredo Ferreira Lage made a noble gesture by donating the entire property to the city. In 1934, he donated the park, and two years later, the museum building itself and its priceless collections. In 2023, the museum made a triumphant reopening after a massive 15-year restoration, once again becoming the region's main cultural center.

Time Needed

To take your time exploring the museum's rich exhibits and appreciate the masterpieces and imperial artifacts, it is recommended to set aside at least 2–3 hours. The collection is very extensive, and each hall deserves thoughtful study.

In addition to the building itself, you should devote a significant amount of time to walking through Mariano Procópio Park. Exploring its English-style gardens can take another 1–2 hours. Thus, a visit to the museum is a perfect half-day plan, harmoniously combining cultural education with outdoor relaxation.
