Rio Museum of Art

About

On the shores of Guanabara Bay in sunny Rio de Janeiro sits a remarkable space — the Rio Art Museum (Museu de Arte do Rio, or MAR). It is not just a gallery, but a true symbol of the rebirth of the city's port district. Its architecture is striking: a futuristic, wave-like roof connects two distinct buildings, creating a single ensemble that evokes the region's maritime history.

Opened in Brazil in 2013, this cultural treasure house holds approximately three thousand works of art. Here you can find everything from rare watercolors by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava to historical artifacts and photographs telling the story of life in Rio over the centuries. The museum is deservedly considered one of the country's main centers for contemporary art.

One of MAR's highlights is its panoramic terrace. From this bird's-eye view, a breathtaking vista of Praça Mauá and the bay opens up, making the museum a must-visit for every tourist seeking inspiration and stunning photos.

What to Do

Start your museum journey on the top floor and work your way down—this allows you to fully appreciate the conceptual flow of the exhibitions. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions by contemporary Brazilian artists, which often touch upon social and historical themes. Be sure to visit the interactive rooms, where multimedia technology helps you literally "hear" and "feel" the rhythm of the city.

Beyond admiring the art, MAR is a fantastic place for architectural photography. The combination of the colonial mansion and modern wave-like panels creates an incredible play of light and shadow. After exploring the galleries, head up to the terrace: it’s one of the best spots in the city to see the futuristic Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã), located right across the way, and enjoy the sea breeze.

If you have time left, stop by the local library or participate in one of the educational workshops often held for visitors. You can round off your walk at the museum café, sipping Brazilian coffee with a view of the transformed port.

Getting There

The museum is located at Praça Mauá, 5 in the historic Saúde district. This is the heart of the revitalized port area, and it is most convenient to reach via public transport. The most modern and pleasant way is the VLT (light rail). You should get off at the Praça Mauá or Mauá stations, which are just a few steps from the main entrance.

If you prefer the metro, the nearest stations are Carioca or Uruguaiana. From there, you can walk for 15–20 minutes while taking in the architecture of the city center, or transfer to a bus (such as lines 104 or 115) heading to the Praça Mauá stop.

For those who value comfort, taxis or Uber services are always available. A trip from Galeão International Airport takes about 30–40 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 50–80 reais. During the day, the area is perfectly safe for walking, especially along the well-maintained waterfront.

History & Facts

The grand opening of the Rio Art Museum (MAR) took place on March 1, 2013. The date was chosen specifically to coincide with the city's 448th birthday. The museum's creation was a key milestone in the massive Porto Maravilha project aimed at revitalizing the abandoned port zone and transforming it into a modern cultural cluster.

The museum's architectural design deserves special attention, as the complex unites two completely different buildings. One is the historic Dom João VI mansion, built in an eclectic style in the 1920s, and the second is a modernist building that formerly housed the port's docks. They are joined by a shared, uniquely wave-shaped roof, symbolizing the sea and the sails of the ships that once docked in this port.

From the beginning, MAR aimed not just to exhibit paintings, but to tell the city's story through art. Its collection quickly grew with unique items, including 1,200 watercolors by Santiago Calatrava and thousands of historical documents dedicated to life in Rio, from the era of slavery to the present day. Today, the museum is considered one of the most important guardians of Brazil's cultural heritage.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the current exhibitions and enjoy the architecture, most visitors need between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. This is enough time to walk through the main halls, peek into the library, and spend time with the multimedia installations.

Be sure to set aside an additional 20–30 minutes to visit the panoramic terrace. The view of Guanabara Bay and the Rio-Niterói Bridge is so impressive that you'll want to linger here to take memorable photos. There is also a cozy souvenir shop on-site where you can find unique art books.
