History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1938 when, on the initiative of Mayor Bento Figueiredo, the site was laid out under its original name, Praça Índios Carirys. At that time, it was intended as a harmonious extension of the neighboring Rosário Square.

In the 1940s, the location's appearance changed significantly: under the leadership of Mayor Vergniaud Wanderley, the square acquired elegant Art Deco features. During this period, a semi-circular pond appeared, and the famous "Samaritan" statue (A Samaritana), created by the talented artist Abelardo da Ora, was installed.

The most radical transformation occurred in 1985. The architecture of the space was completely redesigned: workers replaced the benches and paving, filled in the pond, and removed the Samaritan statue. In place of the old elements, new flowerbeds were laid out and an original dovecote was built, which can still be seen today. Despite all the changes, the square remains a living testament to the evolution of the urban landscape.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the area and feel the rhythm of local life, 1–2 hours is usually enough. This time is sufficient to admire the architectural details and enjoy a short break on one of the benches in the shade of the trees.

If you plan to combine your visit to the square with lunch or dinner at a nearby cafe, you should set aside a bit more time. The square is very compact and conveniently located, so it can easily be combined with exploring other attractions in the city center.

This public space is accessible for visiting at any time convenient for you. Bandeira Square is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing tourists to plan their visit for either daylight hours or an evening walk.
