What to Do

A visit to the museum offers guests a unique opportunity to travel back to an era of bygone luxury. The main draw for tourists is the majestic Noble Room (Salão Nobre), where you can see intricate reliefs, elegant furniture, and Portuguese porcelain sculptures symbolizing history, commerce, and justice. Strolling through the halls, you will see recreated interiors of the governors' private quarters, including bedrooms with antique dressers and mirrors.

Literature lovers should definitely stop by the rooms dedicated to the prominent Alagoan writers Aurélio Buarque de Holanda and Ledo Ivo. Their personal belongings and documents are displayed here, providing a deeper understanding of their creative journeys. The palace walls are also adorned with portraits of former state governors and their wives, creating a special atmosphere of "living history."

In addition to exploring the interiors, you can enjoy works by local painters. The collection of paintings by Rosalvo Ribeiro, consisting of 21 canvases, is a true source of pride for the museum. The palace's tranquil setting is perfect for thoughtful observation and for taking beautiful photographs against the backdrop of grand staircases and ceremonial halls.

Getting There

Finding the Floriano Peixoto Palace Museum is easy, as it is located in the heart of the historical center on Praça dos Martírios. If you are already walking around the center, the building is easily accessible on foot from iconic spots like the Deodoro Theater.

For those who prefer public transport, buses heading to the "Praça dos Martírios" or "Farol" stops are suitable. History & Facts

The history of this grand building began on September 14, 1893, when the first stone of the future palace was laid. The project was designed by engineer Carlos Jorge Calheiros de Lima, but construction was repeatedly interrupted due to political changes and a lack of funding. It wasn't until 1902, under the direction of Italian architect Luiz Lucarini—who also worked on other architectural gems in the region—that the work was completed.

The grand opening took place on September 16, 1902, coinciding with the celebration of the political emancipation of the state of Alagoas. For many years, the palace served as the official residence and headquarters of the state government. The building received its current name in honor of Floriano Peixoto, the first president of Brazil, in 1947 by decree of Governor Silvestre Péricles de Góes Monteiro.

A new chapter in the palace's life began in 2006 when the state government moved to a new residence. By the decision of Governor Ronaldo Lessa, the building was transformed into the Museum (MUPA), designed to preserve and showcase the region's rich history and culture to the public. Today, this site serves not only as a repository of artifacts but also as an important educational center.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the halls and delve into the historical details, a typical visitor will need about 1.5–2 hours. This time is sufficient to study the furniture collections, examine the paintings, and enjoy the rich interior decoration.

If you plan to study the literary exhibitions in detail or want to take many photos in the luxurious interiors, your stay might be slightly longer. The museum is ideal for a relaxed cultural outing in the first half of the day, leaving time for walks to other attractions in the city center.

The museum is open to visitors on weekdays; however, it is worth noting that the schedule may change depending on public holidays. Typically, the palace doors are open according to the following schedule: Monday — from 09:00 to 14:00; from Tuesday to Thursday — from 09:00 to 16:00; Friday — from 09:00 to 14:00.
