Hotel Globo

About

In the heart of the historic center of João Pessoa lies one of the region's most charming buildings—Hotel Globo. Built in the late 1920s, this structure long ago ceased hosting guests, transforming instead into a vibrant cultural center and art gallery open to all lovers of beauty.

The building's architectural style is an exquisite eclectic mix: strict Neoclassical lines coexist harmoniously with the ornate curves of Art Nouveau and the geometric precision of Art Deco. This style emphasized the hotel's high status during its heyday and still makes it stand out against the city landscape of Brazil.

Today, the former hotel attracts travelers not only with its history but also with its unique location on São Frei Pedro Gonçalves Square. Its terraces offer perhaps the most picturesque view of the winding Sanauá River, making it a must-visit spot on any tourist's itinerary.

What to Do

A visit to the hotel is, first and foremost, a visual delight. Today, the building houses an art gallery where you can discover the work of local masters. The halls display paintings, sculptures, and fine handicrafts. Many of the works on display can be purchased, allowing you to take a piece of Brazilian art home as a unique souvenir.

History buffs will enjoy exploring the permanent exhibition, which includes authentic antique furniture and interior items used back when the hotel hosted heads of state. This allows you to almost physically feel the atmosphere of luxury from the beginning of the last century.

However, the main "attraction" is considered the terrace and garden at the back of the building. From here, you get a legendary panoramic view of the Sanauá River. Tourists and locals gather here toward evening to witness an incredible sunset. When the sky turns pink and gold, reflecting in the calm water, it becomes clear why Hotel Globo is called the most romantic spot in the city.

Getting There

This historic monument is located in the heart of the old city, in the Varadouro district, on São Frei Pedro Gonçalves Square. Thanks to its central location, it is easily accessible from anywhere in João Pessoa.

If you are staying in the tourist areas by the ocean (such as Tambaú or Cabo Branco), it is most convenient to take a taxi or use ride-sharing apps. The trip will take about 15–20 minutes. For those who prefer public transport, bus routes heading to the Varadouro terminal are suitable; from there, the hotel is just a few minutes' walk away.

The building is in close proximity to other iconic sites, such as the San Francisco Cultural Center, so it is convenient to combine a visit to the hotel with a walking tour of the historic center. For precise navigation, it is recommended to use GPS coordinates or simply look for the colorful São Pedro Gonçalves Square.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1915 when Hotel Globo opened as the city's first truly luxury establishment. However, it acquired its current appearance and status as an architectural landmark in August 1929, after moving to the elegant building on São Frei Pedro Gonçalves Square. The residence originally belonged to the hotel owner, Henrique Siqueira, whom the townspeople respectfully called "Seu Marinheiro."

During its heyday, which lasted until the mid-20th century, the hotel was the epicenter of social life for all of Brazil. National presidents, prominent politicians, and cultural figures stayed here. Its walls hosted lavish balls and banquets that were the talk of the Paraíba state press for a long time. The hotel's interiors remember the times when it was considered the gold standard of sophistication and prestige.

Over time, the building fell into disrepair but found new life through a large-scale revitalization project of the historic center. The restoration of this monument was made possible through international cooperation between Brazil and Spain. Today, this site is recognized as state cultural heritage and is carefully protected as a museum, offering a glimpse into the city's "golden age."

Time Needed

A brief tour of the architecture and the main art gallery exhibitions usually takes about 30–40 minutes. This is enough time to explore the halls and take a few memorable photos of the facade.

However, if you want to fully soak in the atmosphere and wait for the famous sunset, we recommend setting aside about 1–1.5 hours for your visit. It is best to arrive in the late afternoon to combine exploring the historic interiors with a leisurely break in the hotel garden before dusk.

Working Hours

The cultural center's doors are open to visitors daily. You can plan your visit for any convenient time during the week, as the site operates seven days a week.

Opening hours: Monday — Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00. A significant advantage is that entry to the hotel grounds and the art gallery is completely free of charge.
