The square combines three iconic elements: a well-maintained park area, an elegant bandstand — known as a coreto, and a majestic building known as the Palace of the Lions (Palácio dos Leões). Today, this palace houses the Municipal Museum, which carefully preserves the memory of the city's past.

For tourists, this place is valuable for its authentic early 20th-century atmosphere. Here, you can see a harmonious blend of refined urban design and historical architecture, making the square one of the most photogenic and significant locations in all of Uberlândia.

What to Do

A visit to this location offers guests a calm and thoughtful retreat. This is an ideal location for atmospheric photos that capture the spirit of old Brazil.

The main highlight of your visit will be the Municipal Museum, located in the majestic Palace of the Lions. Inside, you can discover the rich history of the city, see ancient artifacts, and learn more about the cultural development of the region. The architecture of the museum building itself is just as impressive as its collections.

Clarimundo Carneiro Square is also a great place to simply relax on one of the benches, watching the steady rhythm of life in the historic center. It is a true oasis of tranquility where you can enjoy the silence, the architectural beauty, and the grandeur of ancient monuments surrounded by the urban landscape.

History & Facts

Did you know that this picturesque square was once the site of the city's second cemetery? It was closed in 1898, and a decade later, authorities began a large-scale reconstruction of the area to transform it into a public garden and a hub for administrative life. Initially, the site was called Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square), marking the proclamation of the Republic in Brazil.

The location received its current name only in 1961 in honor of Clarimundo Carneiro, a prominent entrepreneur who made an enormous contribution to the region's development in the early 20th century. Before that, the square was known as "Antônio Carlos Square" (after a famous politician of the time). Each name change reflected a new stage in the state's turbulent history.

The main centerpiece of the ensemble is the current Municipal Museum building — the former Paço Municipal (or Palace of the Lions). Designed by Cipriano Del Fávero and opened in 1917, it became the first two-story building in the city. Equally interesting is the elegant coreto (bandstand), built in 1925 during the administration of Eduardo Marques, whose term was nicknamed the "Rule of Flowers" for his love of improving city gardens.

The entire architectural complex of Clarimundo Carneiro Square was officially recognized as a municipal historical heritage site on September 25, 1985. This decision ensured the preservation of the unique appearance of the square and its buildings for future generations of travelers.

Time Needed

For a general tour of the square's architectural ensemble and a short walk by the bandstand, 1 hour is usually sufficient. This is enough time to take beautiful photos of the facades and soak in the atmosphere of the old city.

However, if you plan to go inside the Municipal Museum and carefully study its exhibitions dedicated to the region's history, we recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This will allow you to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage and examine the interiors of the Palace of the Lions in detail without rushing.

Working Hours

Clarimundo Carneiro Square itself is open to the public at any time — it is accessible 24/7 every day of the week, including holidays. You can come here early in the morning for a quiet walk or in the evening to see the architectural lighting.

Please note that the Municipal Museum, located in the Palace of the Lions, operates on its own schedule. If you plan to tour its indoor exhibits, we recommend checking the current opening hours on the city's official website in advance, as they may vary depending on the season or special exhibitions.
