The temple building has a unique three-story structure. Inside, visitors are greeted by elegant nefs divided by arcades and a majestic main chapel. On the upper levels, there are choirs and even historical rooms for nuns, emphasizing the close connection of the parish with the city's educational traditions. Special attention is drawn to the refined decor: the ornaments on the capitals and arches are executed with extraordinary craftsmanship.

The church's interior is adorned with white statues of saints with delicate gold finishes, among which the depictions of Christ the Crucified and Our Lady of Sorrows herself stand out. Sunlight enters the temple through colorful stained glass windows, which bear the names of the families who contributed to the construction of this holy place. Today, the parish remains a living monument to the history of the Fundinho district, reminding us of the times when elegant mansions of the turn of the century prevailed here.

Architecture enthusiasts should carefully study the interior details: note the spiral staircase leading to the choir and the unique black granite altar. Looking at the stained glass windows, you can feel the connection of times by reading the names of those who stood at the foundations of the church. The silence and coolness of the stone vaults make this place ideal for taking a break from the city bustle and for thoughtful reflection.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked with the development of education in the region. The temple was built alongside the Colégio Ressurreição Nossa Senhora, the city's first religious school, founded by Sister Maria Villac. This energetic woman planned to serve in Belgium, but due to the First World War, she remained in Brazil, dedicating her life to building the church and educating the youth.

The first stone in the foundation of the future church was laid on July 17, 1936. Construction was carried out with the active support of the local community, and nuns literally helped build the walls with their own hands. Initially, the chapel served only the needs of the college, and masses were held in adapted classrooms until the building acquired its majestic eclectic look.

The church received official parish status only in 1969 by decree of Bishop Almir Marques Ferreira. Interestingly, the cult of Our Lady of Sorrows, to which the church is dedicated, has its roots in the deep Middle Ages — it originated back in 1221 in Germany. Today, the parish is a major cultural heritage monument protected at the municipal level.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the interior of the church and appreciate its architectural features, you will need about 1 hour. This time is quite sufficient for thoughtful contemplation of the stained glass windows and the altar area.

If you plan to attend a full religious service or participate in festive events, you should budget 2 hours or more. A visit to the church is easily combined with a walk through the historic district, making it an excellent stop for a half-day itinerary.

The parish is open to visitors on weekdays. From Monday to Friday, the temple doors are usually open from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This is a convenient time to step inside during a break between city walks and enjoy the temple's peaceful atmosphere.
