Parish Holy Spirit

About

The Parish of the Holy Spirit is more than just a place of worship; it is a true symbol of architectural avant-garde located in the city of Uberlândia. Designed by the legendary Lina Bo Bardi at the request of Franciscan monks, this church has become an embodiment of the unity between nature, faith, and community in Brazil.

The building's appearance is striking in its simplicity and power: circular brick walls, massive wooden beams made of local aroeira wood, and an open ceiling create an atmosphere reminiscent of Early Christian traditions. The entire complex, which includes the church and living quarters, is harmoniously integrated into the local terrain across four platforms.

\n\n

The fact that it was built by the local community adds special value to the site. The church is recognized as a cultural heritage site and is considered one of the most important examples of \"social architecture\" in the region, attracting both pilgrims and connoisseurs of fine design.

What to Do

The main activity here is contemplating the unique architecture. Visitors are encouraged to explore the interior of the temple, which is organized in a circle. Pay attention to the altar and the font, as well as the amazing combination of raw materials: exposed concrete, brick, and authentic Portuguese mosaic on the floor.

\n\n

In addition to the aesthetic pleasure, you can feel the rhythm of the local community's life. The complex features a meeting hall and a soccer field where neighborhood residents often gather. If you want to see the parish in action, it is worth timing your visit to coincide with the masses:

This place is especially recommended for fans of modern architecture and those looking for more than just grand facades in their travels, but rather a real history created by the hands of ordinary people.

Getting There

The sanctuary is located in the western part of the city at Avenida dos Mógnos, 355, in the Jaraguá district. The most convenient way to get here from the central districts is by taxi or a rental car. The drive along Rondon Pacheco Avenue heading west usually takes about 15–20 minutes.

\n\n

For those who prefer public transport, city buses are available that run to the terminals in the Jaraguá area. It is recommended to check the current route numbers in mobile apps or at bus stops. Since the church is located in a peripheral area, walking from the center can be tiring, so transport is the best choice.

History & Facts

The history of this amazing place began in 1975. Franciscan monks Egidio Parisi and Fulvio Sabbia, who were actively involved in social work, invited the famous Lina Bo Bardi to design a church for migrants and workers in the Jaraguá district. This collaboration turned an ordinary parish into a masterpiece of architectural modernism with a deep humanistic subtext.

\n\n

One of the most remarkable features of the construction was the mutirão method—collective voluntary labor. Led by the architect, local residents built the structure themselves using materials available in the vicinity. Lina Bo Bardi personally supervised the process until 1981, striving to create a space that was as close as possible to the needs of ordinary people.

\n\n

The official opening of the Parish of the Holy Spirit took place in October 1985. In 1991, the complex was recognized as municipal heritage, and in 1996, it received the status of a state cultural heritage site. Today, it is a one-of-a-kind monument in Uberlândia, merging the progressive ideas of the church with a unique Brazilian aesthetic.

Time Needed

For a thoughtful inspection of the architectural features and the church interior, most travelers need about 1–2 hours. This is plenty of time to study the unusual structural details, walk around the adjacent complex, and take some souvenir photos.

\n\n

If you plan to combine your tour with attending a festive mass, you should budget an extra hour for your visit. At other times, the parish remains a quiet place, ideal for a brief introduction to Brazil's architectural heritage.

Working Hours

The doors of the Parish of the Holy Spirit open primarily during religious services. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the church is usually closed for public visits. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can visit from 19:30 to 20:30.

\n\n

The Sunday schedule includes a morning service (07:30 – 08:30) and an evening service (19:00 – 20:00). We advise tourists to check the official Facebook page in advance for up-to-date opening hours, as times may change depending on church holidays.
