General Weather Overview
The climate of Mindelo can be characterised as arid tropical, making it an ideal destination for those seeking stable warmth and sun. Thanks to oceanic influence, an atmosphere of "eternal spring" reigns here: the weather remains comfortable year-round, avoiding both scorching heat and significant cold.
The temperature pattern is distinguished by amazing consistency. In the coolest months (February and March), the air warms up on average to +20°C, while in the warmest period (September), the average temperature is about +25°C. Drastic seasonal fluctuations are not observed here, which allows you to plan a trip for almost any date.
One of the main features of the local climate is the extremely low amount of precipitation. From January to July, there is practically no rain. A small probability of precipitation appears only in August and September, but even in this nominally "wet" season, rains are short-lived and insignificant. Mindelo is a city where you most likely won't need an umbrella.
Temperature
The climate in Mindelo is distinguished by amazing stability and mildness, making the city an attractive destination at any time of the year. The annual temperature range is small: the coolest months — February and March — demonstrate average figures around 20°C, while the peak of heat falls on September, when the air warms up on average to 25–26°C. There is no extreme heat or pronounced cold here, which creates comfortable conditions for quick acclimatisation.
The summer period and the beginning of autumn offer travellers truly warm weather. At this time, especially in August and September, the highest temperatures are established, ideally suited for a beach holiday. The weather is sunny but without stifling heat, as the ocean breeze softens the sun's impact. Even on the hottest days, the temperature rarely exceeds 26°C, remaining within comfortable limits.
Winter months in Mindelo can be described as very mild, resembling a good spring or a not-too-hot summer. A characteristic feature of the local temperature pattern is the minimal temperature fluctuation throughout the day. The difference between day and night figures is only 1–2 degrees. This means that even after sunset, the air remains almost as warm as during the day, sparing you the need to carry warm clothes with you in the evenings.
Precipitation
A very dry climate is characteristic of Mindelo, so significant rainfall here is an extremely rare phenomenon. For most of the year, the sky remains clear, making the city an ideal destination for those who want to avoid rain during their holiday. The dry period here lasts almost all year round, creating excellent conditions for sun lovers.
The driest months are the periods from January to July, as well as November and December. According to statistics, the level of precipitation at this time tends to zero, and the number of days with any moisture is minimal. This guarantees stable weather for walking around the city and beach holidays on the coast of Cape Verde.
A slight change in weather is observed only at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The "rainiest" months are considered August and September, when about 4–6 days with precipitation are recorded. However, even during this period, rains are nominal in nature: the average level of rainfall is only about 1 mm. Usually, these are short-lived and light showers that pass quickly and bring only pleasant freshness.
What to Pack
The climate in Mindelo pleases with stable warmth all year round, so the basis of your luggage should be light summer clothes. T-shirts, shorts, linen trousers, and dresses made of natural breathable fabrics will be the ideal choice for daytime walks. Since rain here is a great rarity (even in the nominally "wet" season in August and September, precipitation is minimal), you will hardly need an umbrella. It is much more important to take care of reliable sun protection: be sure to take a hat, quality sunglasses, and cream with high SPF, as the tropical sun is active even with variable cloudiness.
Despite the consistent temperatures, the Cape Verde islands are known for their winds, which bring freshness from the ocean. In the evenings, as well as in the winter and spring months (from January to May), when the average temperature hovers around +20…+22°C, it can be cool due to the breeze. We recommend packing a windbreaker, jumper, or light hoodie in your suitcase. The principle of layering works excellently here: during the day you enjoy the warmth in light clothing, and after sunset, you throw on something warmer for a comfortable dinner on the waterfront.
To explore the colourful cobbled streets of Mindelo, you will need comfortable flat-soled shoes — light trainers or sandals in which your feet will not get tired during long walks. If you plan to visit the beaches, do not forget swimwear and beach shoes. In general, the style of clothing in the city is relaxed and casual, so when packing, rely primarily on comfort and practicality.
