How to get to Ipiales

Located right on the border with Ecuador, Ipiales is often called the "city in the clouds" due to its high-altitude location in the Andes. This colourful city in Colombia attracts travellers primarily because of its proximity to the famous Las Lajas Sanctuary, which is considered one of the most beautiful temples in the world. When planning how to get to Ipiales, tourists can choose a quick flight to the local airport or a scenic journey by car along winding mountain roads.

The fastest way to reach this high-mountain region is by air. The city is served by San Luis Airport (IPI), located just a few minutes' drive from the central part of Ipiales. The airport receives regular domestic flights, ensuring a reliable connection with the capital region and other parts of the country.

If direct tickets are unavailable, travellers often choose to fly to neighbouring transport hubs. The nearest alternative is the airport in the city of Pasto, located at a distance of 57 km. Flight options via Villagarzon or even via the Ecuadorian city of Nueva Loja are also possible if you are planning a cross-border journey.

Currently, there is no direct railway connection to the city, as there is no operating station in Ipiales. The complex mountainous terrain of the Andes makes the development of passenger trains in this region of Colombia difficult, so the railway is not used by tourists as a way to get here.

Travellers are advised to consider alternative modes of transport, such as buses or cars. Nearby cities, such as Pasto and Villagarzon, also lack railway connections, so the main logistics rely on road transport networks.

Bus service is one of the most affordable and popular ways to get to Ipiales, which serves as an important transit point on the border. The city's central bus terminal receives many trips from various corners of the country, as well as international buses coming from neighbouring Ecuador.

Although the exact travel time depends on the departure point, a bus trip allows you to enjoy the picturesque views of the Andes Mountains. It is recommended to check the schedule at local stations in advance, as routes may change, but regular trips connect the city with major regional centres.

Travelling by car will give you freedom of movement and the opportunity to admire the mountain landscapes. The shortest and most popular route runs from the city of Pasto: the distance is about 82 km, and the travel time will take approximately 1.6 hours along a winding but picturesque road.

For those driving from afar, there are other routes. The road from Villagarzon with a length of about 225 km will require about 6.2 hours of driving. You can also arrive from the Ecuador side via Nueva Loja (244 km), which will take about 5.2 hours, however, time for passing border control should be taken into account.
