How to get to Villagarzon

Located in the picturesque Putumayo department, Villagarzon serves as a true gateway to the Colombian Amazon, attracting travellers with its authenticity and proximity to wildlife. You can reach this colourful city in Colombia in various ways: by utilising local air services or taking a bus trip along the region's scenic roads.

Although Villagarzon is considered a small town, it is serviced by the local Cananguchal Airport (VGZ), which receives regional flights (for example, by Satena airlines), making it the quickest way to get here from the capital. If direct tickets are unavailable, travellers often choose to fly to the neighbouring Puerto Asis (PUU), located just 60 kilometres from the city.

An alternative option is the airport in the city of Pasto (PSO), situated at a distance of 77 kilometres, though the journey from there will take longer due to the mountainous terrain. A route via Nueva Loja (LGQ) is also possible if you are travelling from the Ecuador side.

It is not possible to reach the city of Villagarzon by train, as there is no passenger railway service in this region of Colombia. The complex terrain and dense forests have prevented the development of a railway network here.

The nearest major settlements, such as Puerto Asis and Pasto, also do not have railway stations. Tourists are recommended to use buses or car transfers.

Travelling by bus is a popular and affordable way to get to Villagarzon, allowing you to enjoy views of the local nature. Regular connections are established with the city of Puerto Asis: covering the distance of about 72 km takes approximately 2 hours.

Buses and minibuses run according to a schedule, connecting the main settlements of the department. This is an excellent option for those who wish to save money and immerse themselves in the rhythm of local life.

Travelling by private vehicle gives you freedom of movement and the opportunity to stop at picturesque spots on the way to Villagarzon. The fastest route leads from the city of Puerto Asis: a journey of about 71 km will take approximately 1.5 hours.

If you are driving from the Andes side, the road from the city of Pasto (about 145 km) will require about 4.8 hours due to the complex winding mountain roads. A route is also available from the Ecuadorian border area, from the city of Nueva Loja, which will take around 3.6 hours (184 km).

Villagarzon is the entry point to the amazing world of the Amazon, where nature dictates its own terms. To ensure your journey is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have prepared a list of useful recommendations.

1. Clothing and Gear. The climate here is humid and warm. It is recommended to wear light, long-sleeved clothing for protection against insects and the sun, and to carry a high-quality raincoat and comfortable waterproof shoes.
2. Transport. For moving within the city, it is most convenient to use moto-taxis — this is a fast and common method. For longer trips, it is better to arrange transport with official drivers or use buses.
3. Finances. The official currency is the Colombian Peso. Cards are not accepted everywhere, and ATMs may operate intermittently, so always carry a sufficient supply of cash.
4. Health. Since the region borders the jungle, be sure to use repellents. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended, especially if you plan excursions into national parks.
5. Language. Locals speak predominantly Spanish. Few understand English, so it is worth learning basic phrases or downloading an offline translator.
6. Safety. The city is generally calm, but standard precautions should be observed: do not display large sums of money on the street and use the services of verified guides only.
