Calderón Park (Parque Calderón) is more than just a square; it is the true heart and soul of the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. Located in the center of the historic quarter, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this park is the primary meeting place, recreation spot, and cultural hub for both locals and tourists. Here, you can feel the authentic rhythm of urban life while watching passersby, relaxing on benches in the shade of ancient araucaria trees, or enjoying street performances.

This place literally breathes history. Originally known as Plaza de Armas, the square was renamed in honor of the independence war hero Abdón Calderón, who was born in Cuenca. Key architectural gems of the city are concentrated around the park. On one side stands the Old Cathedral (El Sagrario), built in the 16th century on the foundations of an Incan temple, and on the other, the majestic New Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with its famous sky-blue domes, which have become the city's trademark.
Calderón Park is the perfect starting point for exploring the cobbled streets of the colonial center. It serves as the backdrop for numerous city festivals, parades, and fairs, filling with special energy during holidays. Visiting this iconic location allows you to not only see the sights but also feel the unique atmosphere of one of Ecuador's most beautiful cities.
