General Weather Overview

Sohag is characterized by an arid desert climate, distinguished by an abundance of sunshine and an almost complete absence of rain throughout the year. Dry and clear weather prevails here, so travellers need not worry about sudden downpours — according to statistics, precipitation in this region is an exceptional and unlikely phenomenon in any month.

The temperature regime has a clearly defined seasonality. Summer here is very hot: from June to August, daytime figures often reach 39°C, and the sun shines with maximum intensity. Winter, on the other hand, is mild and comfortable, with average temperatures around 14–16°C. However, it is worth considering the significant temperature drop during winter: nights can be quite cool when the air cools down to 7–9°C.

Thanks to the stable weather, you can plan a trip to Sohag in advance without fearing the whims of nature. The most favourable time for excursions and walks is considered to be the period from October to April, when there is no exhausting heat. If you are travelling here in summer, be prepared for high temperatures and be sure to take care of sun protection.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Sohag is distinguished by a distinct desert character, for which extreme dryness and an abundance of sunny days year-round are typical. The winter period here is very mild and comfortable for excursions: the coolest months are January and February, when the daytime temperature holds at a pleasant mark of around 20–22°C. However, travellers should take into account that nights at this time can be truly cold, with temperatures dropping to 7–8°C, so warm clothing for evening walks will be necessary.

Summer in this region of Egypt is a time of intense heat. From June to August, the thermometer regularly rises to 39°C during the day, and the average temperature stays above 31°C. The heat is easier to bear thanks to the low humidity, as rain is practically completely absent here throughout the year. Even at night during the summer months, the air cools only to 24–25°C, maintaining a feeling of warmth until the very morning.

A specific feature of Sohag's temperature regime is the significant daily fluctuations observed in any season. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum often amounts to 12–15 degrees. Transitional seasons, such as April and October, offer a "happy medium": it is already quite hot during the day (up to 32°C), but the nights bring welcome freshness (around 16–19°C), creating ideal conditions for those who do not tolerate peak summer temperatures well.

Precipitation

The climate of Sohag is characterized by exceptional aridity, which is quite typical for this part of Egypt. Analysis of meteorological data shows surprising stability: throughout the year, the probability of precipitation tends towards zero. There is no customary shift between wet and dry seasons here, as dry weather persists from January to December without exception.

According to statistics, the average amount of precipitation in each month is 0 mm, and the number of rainy days is also zero. This means that rain here is an anomalous and extremely rare phenomenon. The sky over the city remains practically always clear, so tourists can confidently plan long open-air excursions without fearing sudden heavy showers or prolonged bad weather.

The absence of precipitation makes Sohag one of the most predictable places for travel in terms of weather. When packing for your trip, you can confidently leave your umbrella and raincoat at home — you are unlikely to need them here. Instead of rain protection, special attention should be paid to sun protection and maintaining hydration in conditions of constant dry air.

What to Pack

Sohag features a hot desert climate, so the contents of your suitcase should primarily provide protection from the sun and overheating. For a trip during the summer months, when the daytime temperature often exceeds +35°C, choose light, loose clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high SPF factor, as the sun here is very active. Considering that precipitation in this region is practically absent year-round, you definitely won't need an umbrella or raincoat.

If your journey is planned for the winter period (from December to February), be prepared for noticeable temperature contrasts. The days remain pleasant and warm, but nights can be quite cool, with temperatures dropping to +7…+10°C. At this time of year, the principle of layering works best: put a jumper, a thick sweatshirt, or a light jacket in your luggage for evening walks. Also, for excursions around the city and its surroundings, comfortable closed shoes suitable for walking for long periods are indispensable.
