Located on Place Napoléon, this installation turns an ordinary walk through France into an exciting adventure. Here, amidst a picturesque water garden with lilies and ponds, live a giant crocodile, a hippopotamus, flamingos, and other creatures that look incredibly realistic thanks to complex hydraulic systems.

This is not just an exhibition, but a real mechanical zoo where every visitor can feel like a creator by setting the massive figures in motion. The project harmoniously combines art, science, and history, making it one of the most original cultural locations in the region.

What to Do

The main highlight of this place is the opportunity to control the massive machines yourself. Special levers, handles, and buttons hidden in the surrounding vegetation are installed near each animal. You can make the crocodile menacingly open its jaws, the flamingo spread its wings, and the otter make graceful dives into the water. Instructions on the plaques will tell you exactly how to "bring to life" a particular beast.

In addition to playing with the mechanisms, be sure to take a walk through the water garden itself. Here you can watch live koi carp swimming in the ponds or simply relax on wooden loungers. Animator "veterinarians" often work on the square, happily explaining the internal structure of the animatronics and sharing the secrets of their operation. It is an ideal place for family vacations and unusual photo shoots, where technology and nature merge into one.

Getting There

Getting to this unusual location in the heart of La Roche-sur-Yon is easy. The installation is located on the central Place Napoléon, where the main pedestrian and shopping routes converge. If you arrive by train, the walk from the train station will take about 15–20 minutes through lively streets with shops and cafes.

For those who prefer public transport, numerous buses stop in the city center, with routes passing in the immediate vicinity of the square. If you value comfort and speed, you can always use taxi services from the city center or order a car via a mobile app—the trip will take only a few minutes.

Travelers by car can easily reach the city via the A87 or A83 motorways. Parking zones are provided around the square, where the first hour of parking is often free, which is very convenient for a quick tour of the mechanical zoo.

History & Facts

The history of these amazing creatures is steeped in a beautiful legend associated with Napoleon Bonaparte himself. It is believed that in 1804, when the emperor founded the city as Napoléonville, scientists from his Egyptian expedition brought a secret collection of mechanical animals here for study. According to this urban tale, the mechanisms were hidden and only "rediscovered" during the reconstruction of the square in 2012–2013.

In reality, "The Animals of the Square" (Les Animaux de la Place) project was realized by the famous company La Machine under the direction of François Delaroziere. These masters are world-renowned for their giant mechanical structures in Nantes. The installation in La Roche-sur-Yon was a gift to the city for its anniversary, combining historical heritage and modern engineering art.

Each animal in the collection is a complex mechanism made of wood and steel, powered by hydraulic systems. The choice of species—from the Nile perch to the sacred ibis—directly refers to the scientific reports of French researchers in Egypt, highlighting the city's connection to the Napoleonic era. Today, these 13 inhabitants of the square have become a true symbol of Vendée.

Time Needed

Typically, tourists spend between one and two hours exploring and interacting with the inhabitants of the square. If you plan to just take a quick look at the crocodile and snap a few photos, 30 minutes might be enough, but the beauty of this place lies in the leisurely exploration of the mechanisms.

For families with children, the visit often takes longer, as every child wants to personally control all the available animals. Taking into account a break at one of the cozy cafes on the square and a walk through the surrounding water garden, we recommend setting aside a full half-day for this visit.

Working Hours

The The Animal Place - The Crocodile installation is open to the public daily. The standard operating schedule for the square and the mechanisms is from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM without breaks or days off.

It is worth noting that during the summer period (from mid-June to early September), opening hours are often extended until 7:00 PM so that guests can enjoy the cool of the water garden longer. However, keep in mind that individual animals may be temporarily absent from the square due to scheduled technical maintenance.
