"Dragon of the Seas" is the impressive unofficial name for the Submarine Base (Base Sous-Marine), located in the port city of Saint-Nazaire. This monumental reinforced concrete structure, erected in the early 1940s, represents one of the most powerful fortifications ever built in France to protect its naval fleet.

The site is striking in its scale: its roof, up to 8 meters thick, consists of several layers of granite and steel, making it practically invulnerable to the aircraft of that time. Hidden inside are 14 massive submarine pens, as well as a labyrinth of workshops, living quarters, and kitchens. Today, this somber grandeur has transformed into a unique tourist attraction, drawing fans of history and industrial architecture.
The base serves as a silent witness to past naval battles and the engineering genius of the 20th century. Visitors come here to feel the atmosphere of former power and to see how the massive concrete "dragon" has become an integral part of the city's modern landscape while preserving its austere historical identity.
