Basilique Saint-Urbain de Troyes

About

The Saint-Urbain Basilica in Troyes is a true gem of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, located in the historic center of Troyes. Due to its incredible structural lightness and flawless proportions, this church is often hailed as the "Parthenon of Champagne." Built in the 13th century, it became one of the boldest architectural projects of its time in France.

The main feature of the basilica lies in its "transparency." The walls here seem almost weightless, as the primary load is transferred to external flying buttresses, while the interior space is occupied by enormous stained-glass windows. Instead of the usual three-tier wall division, only two levels are used here, creating a sense of incredible height and filling the interior with streams of light.

Inside, the basilica houses unique artistic treasures, including original stained glass from 1270 and the famous statue "Virgin of the Grapes" (Vierge aux Raisins)—an exquisite example of the 16th-century Troyes school of sculpture. Today, this national monument is a must-see for all connoisseurs of medieval art.

What to Do

Once inside the basilica, the first thing to notice is the unique 13th-century stained glass in the choir and transept. On a sunny day, they create a unique atmosphere in the church, painting the stone walls in a kaleidoscope of colors. Be sure to find the statue of the Vierge aux Raisins (Virgin of the Grapes) in the southern chapel—this 16th-century masterpiece is considered one of the most delicate and soulful depictions of the Madonna.

The exterior of the basilica deserves an equally detailed look. Examine the western portal with its Last Judgment tympanum, which has been preserved since the 13th century. The delicate stone carvings, resembling fine lace, showcase the incredible skill of medieval stonemasons. Photography enthusiasts will find many interesting angles here, especially from the apse, where the architectural rhythm of the flying buttresses is most clearly visible.

For a deeper dive into history, we recommend using an audio guide or visiting the adjacent Jardin des Innocents. This quiet spot on the site of a former cemetery allows you to take a break from the city bustle and look at the basilica from another perspective, appreciating its majesty and harmony with the surrounding space.

Getting There

Saint-Urbain Basilica is located in the heart of the historical center on Place Vernier. Thanks to its convenient location, it is easy to reach on foot from almost anywhere in the old town. For example, a walk from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul takes no more than 10 minutes.

If you arrive by train, the walk from the Gare de Troyes railway station takes about 15–20 minutes. You can also use the city's TroyBus network (lines 5 or 6) to the "Cathédrale" stop or directly to the station, where taxis and trambuses are available.

For those traveling by car, it is recommended to leave your vehicle in one of the central parking lots, such as Parking Cathédrale or Place de la Croix Morainée. From there, it is only a few minutes' leisurely stroll through picturesque streets to the basilica's entrance. From Paris, Troyes can be reached by high-speed TGV train in just an hour and a half.

History & Facts

The history of this church began in 1262 by order of Pope Urban IV (Jacques Pantaléon). Remarkably, the pontiff was the son of a simple shoemaker from Troyes and decided to erect a magnificent collegiate church on the very spot where his father's workshop once stood. It was a gesture of deep affection for his roots.

However, the construction faced fierce resistance from the nuns of the Abbey of Notre-Dame-aux-Nonnains. Believing that the Pope was encroaching on their territory, they repeatedly sabotaged the work, destroyed the construction site, and even engaged in skirmishes with the workers. Despite all the difficulties and the death of Urban IV in 1264, the main structures were completed by the end of the 13th century, and original stained glass windows adorned the choir as early as the 1270s.

Interestingly, the basilica only attained its final appearance centuries later: the western facade and the vaulted roof were completed only at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries under the direction of the architect Selmersheim, who strictly adhered to the medieval plans. In 1935, the remains of Pope Urban IV himself were transferred to the church, fulfilling his final wish to be buried in his hometown in France.

Time Needed

For a standard tour of Saint-Urbain Basilica, 45–60 minutes is sufficient for most travelers. This is enough time to admire the elegant facade, study the Last Judgment tympanum, and enjoy the play of light in the 13th-century stained-glass windows.

If you are passionate about architectural history or want to sit quietly in the silence of the church, set aside a little over an hour for your visit. An additional 15–20 minutes can be spent in the cozy Jardin des Innocents, located directly behind the basilica building.
