Opened in 1892, the museum is considered a gold standard for preserving national heritage. Its halls combine the austerity of medieval architecture with the brilliance of precious exhibits. Visitors can see the legendary treasures of Basel Cathedral, ancient stained glass, and unique 15th-century tapestries, which make this site a must-see on any traveler's itinerary.

The building itself is an architectural monument: its name, "Barfüsserkirche", translates as "Church of the Barefoot," a reminder of the Franciscan monks who once lived here. This place is perfect for those who want to feel the spirit of the Upper Rhine and learn how the city evolved from the Middle Ages to the present day.

What to Do

A visit to the museum begins with an immersion into the atmosphere of Gothic architecture. You can appreciate the majestic high vaults of the former church, which now serve as a frame for unique historical displays. One of the main crown jewels of the collection is the Basel Cathedral Treasury, where gold and silver items are displayed, stunning in their delicate craftsmanship.

Art lovers should pay attention to the 15th-century textiles and tapestries, which are considered some of the finest examples of the late Middle Ages in Europe. The museum also features collections of ancient coins, furniture, and rare stained glass, allowing you to literally touch the daily life and culture of past centuries. As you walk among the exhibits, you will see how harmoniously historical artifacts are integrated into the space of the ancient temple.

For a deeper dive into the context, the museum offers audio guides or the chance to visit temporary thematic exhibitions. Educational programs are often held here, making a visit interesting not only for adult history buffs but also for families with children. Don't forget to set aside time to view the interior installations that recreate the city's appearance across different eras.

Getting There

The museum is located in the heart of the historic center at Barfüsserpl. 7. Getting here is incredibly easy: the "Barfüsserplatz" public transport stop is literally at the entrance. Trams No. 2, 6, 8, 10, and 15 stop here, connecting the square with most districts of the city.

If you prefer walking, the route from Basel SBB station or the famous Basel Minster takes no more than 10–15 minutes. Those who value comfort can use taxi services — the ride from central hotels or the city's main squares to the museum will be quick and convenient.

For travelers arriving from EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, it is most convenient to take a bus to Basel SBB station and then transfer to a tram. Drivers should note that the museum is in a pedestrian zone, so it is best to leave your car in nearby covered parking lots, such as Parkhaus City or Elisabethen.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in the 13th century when the Barfüsserkirche was built. It originally served as the spiritual home for the Franciscan Order, and its austere architecture still reflects the ascetic ideals of the "barefoot" monks. However, in 1529, at the height of the Reformation, the building became city property and lost its exclusively religious status.

Over the centuries, the former church was used for various, sometimes unexpected purposes: it housed a hospital, a school, and even warehouse space. Although services ceased here at the end of the 18th century, the building retained its majesty and was chosen as the ideal venue for storing the city's antiquities.

Between 1890 and 1894, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, transforming the dilapidated structure into the modern (at the time) Basel Historical Museum. Today, the museum's collection, which traces its roots back to private collections of 16th-century patrons, is considered one of the richest collections of cultural heritage in the Upper Rhine region.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the halls and soak in the atmosphere of the ancient church, most visitors need between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This time is sufficient to study the main treasures of the cathedral treasury, admire the tapestries, and examine the architectural details of the interior.

If you plan to study the coin collections in detail or use an audio guide for a deep dive into the history of each exhibit, we recommend allocating the morning for your visit. The museum is quite compact, but its density of artifacts deserves an attentive approach.
