Dreiländergalerie

About

Located at the junction of three countries, in the area where the borders of Germany, France, and the territory of Switzerland meet, lies the futuristic Dreiländergalerie. It is more than just a shopping center; it is a true masterpiece of modern architecture and a new landmark for the region. Designed by the renowned Chapman Taylor firm, the building is striking with its smooth curves and golden facade that shimmers beautifully in the sunlight.

Spanning over 63,000 m², the complex is harmoniously integrated into the landscape of Weil am Rhein, situated in close proximity to a major center like Basel. Inside, visitors will find three levels with a wide selection of shops, a modern fitness club, and even a kindergarten with an outdoor playground right on the roof. The entrance group, designed as an elegant tower, serves as a landmark for everyone arriving by tram.

The significance of the project is highlighted by its role in the life of the Dreiländereck — a unique "three-country" space. Thanks to its location and high level of service, Dreiländergalerie attracts both locals and tourists looking to combine the aesthetic pleasure of architecture with quality European shopping in an elegant and friendly atmosphere.

What to Do

The main activity at Dreiländergalerie is, of course, high-quality shopping. It features over 60 shops of famous global and European brands offering clothing, cosmetics, and home goods. Thanks to the spacious halls with natural lighting and intuitive navigation with escalators and elevators, the shopping process turns into a pleasant stroll in an atmosphere of luxury.

Be sure to head to the upper level to enjoy the gastronomic variety in the local restaurants. The spacious terrace measuring 150 m² deserves special attention. It offers an impressive panoramic view of the "border triangle," allowing you to observe life in several countries at once. It is the perfect place to take spectacular photos or simply relax with a cup of coffee.

For those who value an active lifestyle or are traveling with family, the complex offers additional opportunities. A modern fitness center operates here, and a safe play area for children is set up on the roof. The high concentration of services and proximity to a city like Basel make this center a popular destination for cross-border weekend trips.

Getting There

Getting to this unique shopping space is incredibly easy, especially if you are in Basel. The most popular and convenient way is to take Tram No. 8, which directly connects the Swiss city with the German town of Weil am Rhein. The terminus, "Weil am Rhein Bahnhof/Zentrum", is located literally at the main entrance to the complex, near the famous "tram tower."

For those who prefer the railway, the Weil am Rhein station is nearby, where S-Bahn trains arrive. From the station, you can reach the shopping center entrance on foot in just 5–10 minutes by following the B3 highway. The complex is also perfectly integrated into the network of pedestrian and bicycle paths, making it accessible to residents of all three border countries.

Travelers by car will appreciate the direct access from the B3 federal highway. For the convenience of drivers, there is a modern underground parking garage with 550–600 parking spaces. The navigation system inside the parking lot and convenient exits help avoid traffic jams even during peak hours, providing easy access to any of the three main entrances to the building.

History & Facts

The history of this architectural giant began in 2013 with a large-scale European tender. The city of Weil am Rhein aimed to transform the Europaplatz area, creating a modern center of attraction for residents of the border region. The winner of the competition was CEMAGG, and the final decision on construction was made by the city's residents in a city-wide referendum in 2015.

Construction work, which began in November 2018, was a complex engineering task. Due to the terrain's characteristics — a 15-meter height difference — the building is literally "built into" the slope. The architectural firm Chapman Taylor developed a unique wave-like facade shape, clad in perforated aluminum composite panels in a specially created shade called Schapira Gold.

Initial plans for an opening in 2020 had to be adjusted due to external circumstances, and Dreiländergalerie officially opened its doors to its first visitors on September 29, 2022. The project required an investment of about 85 million euros, but the result exceeded expectations: the building became not only a shopping hub but also a striking architectural landmark recognized for its futuristic design.

Time Needed

A one-hour stroll through the floors is enough to simply appreciate the architecture of Dreiländergalerie. However, if your goal is thoughtful shopping and exploring the range of numerous brands, we recommend setting aside at least 2–4 hours for your visit. This time will be enough to walk through the main shopping levels and take your time choosing the items you need.

If you plan to combine shopping with lunch or dinner on the panoramic terrace, or a visit to the fitness center or children's play area on the roof, your visit may last for half a day. Thanks to the well-thought-out infrastructure and relaxation zones, you can spend time here comfortably without feeling the fatigue of the city's hustle and bustle.
