History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the second half of the 13th century. The first official mention of the castle was recorded in 1363: at that time, it was owned by the influential Kämmerer aristocratic family, who served the bishops of Basel. They are credited with founding this fortified residence.

Fundamental changes to the building's appearance occurred in 1720. Johannes Deucher, an ambitious new owner, initiated a large-scale reconstruction. Thanks to his efforts, the austere medieval fortress was transformed into an elegant country manor in the early French Baroque style. He filled the halls with works of art, turning the castle into one of the most prestigious estates in the region.

The 20th century brought serious challenges and the threat of destruction to the castle, but thanks to the intervention of historian Karl Roth and the Swiss Castle Association, the site was saved. A major restoration was carried out in 1942, involving the local population and cantonal authorities. Since 1957, Bottmingen Castle has been under state protection as a monument of national importance.
