The hut is located in close proximity to the crystal-clear Härzlisee lake, famous for its barefoot walking trail. Brunnihütte offers not only delicious local cuisine on its outdoor terrace but also the possibility of a proper overnight stay in the mountains — there are 32 sleeping berths available for those who want to watch the sunrise at high altitude.

It is not just a point on the map, but a full-fledged hub for outdoor activities. Here you can rent climbing equipment or sleds, depending on the season. Thanks to easy access via cable car, the hut is popular among both professional athletes and families with children seeking the peace and beauty of the Swiss highlands.

What to Do

The main magnet for visitors during the summer season is the rock climbing area, located at an altitude of 1,895 meters. The routes here are well-prepared and perfectly suited for beginners, and all necessary equipment, including safety ropes and quickdraws, can be rented right at the hut. Popular via ferratas such as Brunnistöckli and Zittergrat also start from here.

In winter, Brunnihütte transforms into a launching pad for winter fun enthusiasts. A thrilling 2.5 km toboggan run begins at the hut and leads down to Ristis station. Skiers can enjoy 8.5 km of well-groomed slopes, including one of the country's steepest sections with a 48% gradient, which challenges even experienced athletes.

For those who prefer a more relaxed holiday, a walk around Lake Härzlisee is a must. Here, you can experience unique sensations on the "tickle trail" (Kitzelpfad), designed for walking barefoot over various natural materials. After your walk, there is nothing better than relaxing on the sunny terrace with a portion of traditional Alpine food while admiring the view of Mount Titlis.

Getting There

The journey to the hut begins in the center of Engelberg. The most convenient and scenic way to get there is by using the Brunni cable car. First, you will ascend to the Ristis intermediate station at 1,600 meters, and then transfer to a chairlift that takes you directly to Brunnihütte. The entire ascent takes about 10–15 minutes.

For those who prefer public transport, trains run regularly from Zurich to Engelberg (travel time is about 2 hours with a transfer). From the train station, you can walk to the cable car station or take a local free bus. If you are traveling by car, head for the address Wydenstrasse 55, where the resort's parking areas are located.

Outdoor enthusiasts can choose a hiking route. Well-maintained mountain trails lead from Engelberg to the hut via the Ristis station, and experienced hikers can arrive from Lake Bannalpsee via the famous Walenpfad high-altitude route.

History & Facts

Brunnihütte belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and has been an important part of the region's tourism infrastructure for many decades. Its history is inextricably linked with the development of the Brunni ski resort. For example, the first chairlift connecting Ristis station to the hut was built back in 1963, making this high-altitude location accessible not only to experienced mountaineers but also to regular tourists.

An interesting fact is the ecological focus of the site. The slopes in the Brunnihütte area are prepared using spring water, and solar energy is actively used to power the equipment. Its location on the southern slope, known as Engelberg's "sunny side," allows the hut to receive maximum natural heat and light, even during the winter months.

The area is also known for its hydraulic structures. In the 1930s, the Bannalpsee reservoir was created nearby to power a local hydroelectric plant. This construction led to the creation of new trails, including the now-popular Walenpfad route, which connects the hut with neighboring valleys.

Time Needed

A standard visit to Brunnihütte, including the cable car ride, a short walk by the lake, and lunch on the panoramic terrace, usually takes between 3 to 5 hours. This is the optimal amount of time to enjoy the mountain air without any rush.

If you plan to combine your visit with active pursuits, such as climbing in the local park or a long hike along the Walenpfad route, you should allow for a full day (6–8 hours). In winter, ski and sled enthusiasts also spend most of the day here, taking advantage of the extensive network of trails.

Working Hours

The opening hours of Brunnihütte depend directly on the season and the schedule of the Brunni cable cars. As a rule, it welcomes guests daily during the summer (May to October) and winter seasons. During lift maintenance periods, the hut may be closed to the general public; however, a special emergency shelter (Schutzraum) remains open for mountaineers 24/7.

In winter, in addition to daytime hours, the Klostermatte area offers night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays (from 18:00 to 21:00) under artificial lighting. It is highly recommended to check the current operating status and lift schedule on the resort's official website before your trip.
