Originally built in 1898 as a railway restaurant, the building eventually transformed into a luxury lifestyle hotel. Today, this gem, which Switzerland is justly proud of, offers its guests 73 unique rooms where classic decor elements sit alongside vibrant color palettes—from deep blue to noble gold.

While the property may be listed in some registries as a nightclub due to its legendary bar, it is in fact a multifunctional space. It houses high-end restaurants, modern conference rooms, and cozy relaxation areas, attracting both ski enthusiasts and cosmopolitan travelers who appreciate quality service and historical context.

What to Do

A visit here promises a rich holiday in the style of "urban alpinism." Start your experience in the Living Room — the central lounge with a cozy fireplace, where you can unwind with a drink or a cup of hot chocolate. The hotel's outdoor terrace offers stunning panoramic views of the peaks, creating the perfect setting for morning meditation or evening relaxation.

Foodies should definitely stop by the legendary Yuci restaurant (formerly known as Yucatan), which is famous for its unique atmosphere and excellent Swiss cuisine. In the evening, this space transforms into a hub for networking and socializing, attracting both hotel guests and locals.

For winter sports enthusiasts, every convenience is provided: guests have access to free ski lockers, and the shuttle stop for the lifts is just a few minutes away. Business travelers will also appreciate the modern conference rooms, capable of hosting up to 250 people, and the high-speed internet available throughout the premises.

Getting There

Finding this landmark is incredibly easy: it is located at Bahnhofstrasse 10, literally just a few steps from the railway station. This makes it an ideal starting point for those arriving in Engelberg by train. The journey from major cities such as Zurich, Bern, or Basel takes no more than 90 minutes by car, while trains from Zurich and Basel airports to Lucerne, with a subsequent transfer to the local line, run every hour.

Once in town, everything is within walking distance. If you plan to head to the ski slopes, a free shuttle stops right at the entrance and will take you to the lifts in just 3 minutes. For those traveling by private vehicle, on-site parking is available.

You can also take a local taxi from the central square, though a short walk through the picturesque streets is just as enjoyable. The property is easy to find on navigation maps by its coordinates or name.

History & Facts

The history of this iconic site began on May 13, 1898. It was then that Melchior Odermatt opened the Terminus restaurant, an event timed to coincide with the launch of the Stansstad–Engelberg railway. The name "Terminus" symbolically indicated its location at the very end of the railway line. Over time, the modest restaurant expanded into a full-fledged hotel, evolving alongside the growing popularity of winter sports in the region.

Throughout the 20th century, the building was extended several times and even housed the town's first tourist office. After the Odermatt family sold the property, it changed hands several times until the 1990s, when Roger Filliger leased space here for the Yucatan restaurant. The establishment quickly became legendary and was even featured in Lonely Planet guidebooks.

In 2009, Filliger purchased the entire building and initiated an extensive modernization program. Between 2011 and 2017, approximately 7.5 million francs were invested in the project. The renovation allowed for a complete overhaul of the north and south wings, the implementation of modern safety and seismic resistance systems, all while preserving the unique charm of the historic building. In 2017, the property was officially awarded four-star hotel status according to Hotellerie Suisse standards.

Time Needed

If you plan to visit Bellevue-Terminus just to admire its architecture and atmosphere, 1–2 hours will be sufficient. This is enough time to explore the Belle Époque interiors, check out the stylish Living Room lounge, or enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace with mountain views.

For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the local lifestyle, it is worth setting aside a full day or even several days. This will allow you not only to enjoy dinner at the legendary restaurant but also to use the hotel as a convenient base for active exploration of the surrounding slopes and town attractions.

Working Hours

The property welcomes guests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows travelers to arrive and check in at any convenient time, regardless of train schedules.

Despite the 24-hour reception, the operating hours for the internal restaurants and bars may vary. To plan a dinner or attend specific events, it is recommended to check the information on the official website of Bellevue-Terminus in advance.
