The Brunni-Bahnen complex is famous for its special microclimate: thanks to the protection of the massive Mt. Titlis range, it is almost windless here, and the number of sunny days per year is significantly higher than the regional average. This makes Brunni an ideal destination for family vacations and fans of panoramic views at any time of year.

The lift system connects the valley with high-mountain areas, home to cozy restaurants and the famous Brunnihüttli mountain hut. Brunni is not just a transport network, but a full-scale center for active leisure, combining ski slopes, hiking trails, and relaxation zones against the backdrop of the majestic Swiss Alps.

What to Do

At Brunni, leisure opportunities change with the seasons but always remain exciting. In summer, the main attraction is Lake Härzlisee, which is heart-shaped. Picnic and barbecue areas are set up around it, and for hiking enthusiasts, the famous Walenpfad route leads towards Lake Bannalp. Those seeking adrenaline can try their hand at paragliding, launching from one of the three equipped take-off sites.

In winter, the slopes of Brunni transform into a paradise for skiers and snowboarders, offering about 8.5 km of groomed trails. Sledding is particularly popular: two 2.5 km routes descend from the Brunni hut to the Ristis station, providing plenty of excitement for both children and adults. For the youngest guests, the Yeti Kids Park is available, where they can learn the basics of winter sports in a safe environment.

For experienced mountaineers and climbers, the Bettlerstock area at an altitude of 2,100 meters is available. Regardless of your skill level, every visitor can simply enjoy the silence of the high mountains or relax on the terrace of one of the mountain restaurants, admiring the panorama of the valley and the snow-capped peaks.

Getting There

The valley station, where the Brunni Cable Cars depart, is located at Wydenstrasse 55 in Engelberg. The town itself is easily accessible by train from Lucerne, offering breathtaking views of the lake and mountain landscapes of central Switzerland along the way. From the train station, you can reach the cable car station in 10–15 minutes on foot or take the free ski bus (during the season).

The journey begins in a cable car cabin that takes guests to the Ristis intermediate station (1600 meters) in six minutes. From there, a modern chairlift carries tourists even higher to the Brunni area and the high-altitude Lake Härzlisee. The entire route is technically well-designed and comfortable, even for those traveling with children.

If you prefer the comfort of a taxi, one can be called directly to the train station or from the town center. For motorists, parking is provided next to the valley station, though it is recommended to arrive early to secure a spot during peak winter and summer days.

History & Facts

The history of developing this picturesque slope began in the mid-20th century. The company Luftseilbahn Engelberg-Brunni AG was officially registered in the spring of 1951, and by February 1952, the grand opening of the first cable car took place. This moment was a turning point in transforming Brunni into one of the most popular holiday destinations in the region.

The infrastructure has been constantly improved: in 1970, a new cable car with 15-person cabins was launched, capable of reaching speeds of up to six meters per second. Later, in 1993, a three-seater chairlift was installed between the Ristis and Brunnihüttli stations. Interestingly, it was designed for year-round operation and can transport up to 1,200 people per hour, providing reliable access to the high mountains.

Special mention should be made of the artificial Lake Bannalp, which is now considered one of the gems of the complex. It was created between 1935 and 1937 for the needs of a local power station. Also preserved on the territory are elements of the "old" school of engineering—the small "Schrote Bähnli" cargo cable car, built back in the 1930s, which still helps supply the Alpine huts with food today.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy all the opportunities offered by the Brunni Cable Cars, it is best to dedicate a full day (4 to 8 hours) to your visit. This time is enough for the ascent, a leisurely walk around Lake Härzlisee, lunch at a mountain hut, and even a short hike along one of the panoramic routes.

If your goal is active winter recreation, you should set aside at least 3–5 hours for skiing or sledding. The popular Walenpfad hiking trail also requires significant time: the path from Brunni toward Lake Bannalp takes several hours one way. For those short on time, an express visit of 2–3 hours is possible, including an ascent to the highest point and a short photo session against the backdrop of the Alpine peaks.

Working Hours

The Brunni Cable Cars complex operates daily, providing access to the summits on both weekdays and weekends. According to the standard schedule, the lifts are open to visitors at the following times:

  • Monday — Sunday: 08:00 – 17:00 (until 18:00 during some seasons)

It is important to note that the operation of certain sections may depend on the season. For example, the small "Schrote Bähnli" cable car operates from mid-May to the end of October. Additionally, technical maintenance is carried out annually (usually in November), during which lift operations may be suspended, so it is recommended to check the current status on the official website before your trip.
