MBS Arena

About

MBS Arena is a modern multi-functional sports and entertainment complex located in a picturesque district of Potsdam, which is effectively a suburb of the metropolis Berlin. This place pulsates with the energy of competition and serves as the home ground for several professional teams, including the volleyball club "SC Potsdam" and the handball club "1. VfL Potsdam".

The arena is located within the famous Luftschiffhafen sports park, which adds a touch of historical charm. The building stands out for its modern architecture and ability to transform for a wide variety of events: from intense Bundesliga matches to concerts and cultural shows. For tourists, this is a great opportunity to see a non-touristy, lively side of the region's life.

What to Do

The main reason to visit MBS Arena is for live sports emotions. Visitors can witness thrilling matches from professional leagues. Particularly popular are the games of the women's volleyball team SC Potsdam and the men's handball club, which gather full stands. The atmosphere at the games is always electric, and German fans know how to support their favorites loudly and beautifully.

Besides sports, the arena regularly hosts cultural events. Here you can catch a concert, a comedy show, or a large-scale exhibition. Modern lighting and sound equipment make any performance spectacular. It is recommended to check the schedule in advance to combine your trip with an interesting event.

Before or after the event, it is worth taking a walk through the Sportpark Luftschiffhafen. This is a historic spot on the shore of Lake Templiner See, where you can enjoy nature, watch rowers training, or simply take a break from the urban bustle of Berlin. A walk along the promenade makes for an excellent addition to a visit to the arena.

Getting There

Since MBS Arena is actually located in the city of Potsdam (a satellite of the capital), the journey from central Berlin will take some time, but the route is quite simple and scenic. The most convenient way is to use the city train S-Bahn (line S7) or the regional train (RE1) to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (Potsdam Central Station).

From Potsdam station, you can reach the arena itself by tram. You will need routes No. 91 or No. 98 (in the direction of Pirschheide), and you should get off at the stop Luftschiffhafen. The tram ride takes about 10–15 minutes, and from the stop to the complex entrance is just a few minutes on foot.

If you prefer the comfort of a taxi or a rental car, aim for the address Olympischer Weg 2. A taxi ride from central Berlin can be expensive due to the distance (about 30–40 km), so many tourists choose a taxi only from Potsdam station to the arena.

History & Facts

The history of the site where MBS Arena stands is much older than the building itself. The complex is located on the territory of the historic Luftschiffhafen — the "Airship Port". It was here in the early 20th century, under the leadership of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, that legendary airships were built and tested. The spirit of innovation and movement has permeated this land for over a hundred years.

The arena itself was ceremoniously opened in 2012, replacing outdated sports facilities. The project cost tens of millions of euros and became a symbol of the modernization of the region's sports infrastructure. The complex owes its name to its sponsor — the bank Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse (MBS), which actively supports the development of sports in Brandenburg.

The architecture of the building combines functionality with modern design. Thanks to thoughtful acoustics and a flexible seating configuration accommodating over 2,000 spectators, the arena quickly became a favorite spot not only for sports fans but also for organizers of cultural events.

Time Needed

The time spent at MBS Arena directly depends on the purpose of your visit. If you have come for a sports match (for example, volleyball or handball), expect to spend 2 to 3 hours here. This is enough time to find your seats, enjoy the game, and grab a snack during the break.

For attending concerts or special events, more time may be required — up to 4 hours, taking into account the time for entry and exit. If you are simply viewing the architecture of the Olympic Park from the outside, it will take no more than 30–40 minutes.

Working Hours

MBS Arena does not have fixed opening hours like a museum, as access inside depends on the event schedule. The complex opens its doors to visitors on days of matches, concerts, or exhibitions, usually 1–1.5 hours before the start of the event.

To avoid arriving at closed doors, we strongly recommend checking the official website of the arena or ticket operator sites in advance. Box offices on the complex grounds also operate primarily on event days, so it is better to take care of purchasing tickets online beforehand.

Visiting the arena is an excellent excuse to explore the surroundings, as you are in Potsdam, a city of palaces and parks bordering Berlin. This region is rich in entertainment: from historic film studios to modern active recreation parks that will appeal to both adults and children.
