The centerpiece of this architectural ensemble is Packhalle IV, built back in 1906. Today, under its roof—which reliably protects tourists from the unpredictable northern weather—you'll find cozy restaurants, cafes, and specialized seafood shops. It’s not just an open-air museum, but a vibrant space where deep-sea fishing history meets modern comfort and hospitality.

Adding special significance to the site is the museum ship "Gera" moored here — the last remaining German side trawler. The complex harmoniously combines maritime romance, educational elements, and gastronomic pleasures, making it a must-visit for any traveler in the north of the country.

What to Do

At "Schaufenster Fischereihafen," everyone will find something to enjoy. The main magnet for foodies is tasting the freshest seafood at the Packhalle IV restaurants. Here, you can try fish prepared according to traditional recipes or stop by the shops to buy smoked delicacies as gifts for loved ones. For those who want to experience the life of sailors, a visit to the museum trawler "Gera" is a must. Visitors are allowed to look into the engine room, the crew's living quarters, and the galley, allowing you to literally touch the history of the harsh fishing trade.

Culture enthusiasts should plan their visit for the summer. On Thursdays, free concerts are often held as part of the Bremerhavener Musiksommer project, while the market square regularly hosts farmers' markets and beer festivals. In the evening, it's pleasant to sit on the wooden steps by the water, watching the setting sun and yachts bobbing on the waves. If the weather isn't right for walking, you can head to the Expedition Nordmeere exhibition in the Fischbahnhof building or catch a performance at the local theater, TiF (Theater im Fischereihafen).

For a family outing, a trip on the historic steamboat MS Hansa or a ride on a special sightseeing bus that departs right from the harbor is a great choice. Children will love the chance to watch ships in the floating dock, while adults will appreciate the cozy atmosphere of the waterfront cafes, where you can relax with a drink and enjoy panoramic views of the port.

Getting There

Getting to this picturesque spot is quite easy. Schaufenster Fischereihafen is located at Am Schaufenster 7, about 3–4 kilometers south of the city's main railway station. If you prefer public transport, take the buses heading to the Fischereihafen or Forum Fischbahnhof stops. They run regularly from the station and central districts.

For those traveling by car, there are parking areas near the Havenwelten complex. The location is easy to find in a navigator using the official address or coordinates. Additionally, the popular HafensBus sightseeing bus starts from here, combining a visit to the harbor with a tour of the city's port territories.

If you are already in the center exploring other attractions like the German Emigration Center or the Climate House, a walk to the harbor along the promenade will take about 10–15 minutes. The area also has a well-developed network of bike paths, making cycling a pleasant alternative to a taxi or bus.

History & Facts

The history of this place began at the end of the 19th century. The Geestemünde fishing harbor was built between 1891 and 1896 as a modern deep-water port designed specifically for the needs of ocean fishing. Back then, it was a true industrial giant: by 1906, the famous fish processing hall Packhalle IV was built, becoming the architectural landmark of the area.

In the early 20th century, the harbor flourished. The Bremerhaven Ice Works opened here (which, surprisingly, still functions today), and in 1920, a fish railway station began operating for the rapid dispatch of the catch. However, by the late 1920s, capacity became insufficient, and the main trade moved to new port areas, after which the historical buildings gradually fell into decay.

The harbor found its second wind in the 1990s. A large-scale restoration transformed the dilapidated buildings into a tourist center. A significant event was the rescue of the trawler "Gera" from being scrapped in Portugal — the ship was returned home and turned into a unique museum. Today, "Schaufenster Fischereihafen" is a shining example of how industrial heritage can be transformed into a modern cultural space while preserving the spirit of the old port.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore "Schaufenster Fischereihafen," it usually takes about 1.5 to 3 hours. This is enough time to walk along the promenade, browse the souvenir shops, and spend about 45 minutes exploring the museum ship "Gera."

If you plan on having a full lunch at one of the local fish restaurants or want to wait for the sunset on the wooden stands by the water, you should set aside half a day for your visit. During festivals or concerts, your stay may be longer as the festive atmosphere encourages long periods of relaxation.

Working Hours

The harbor area itself and the promenade are open to visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows tourists to enjoy the sea views and moonlit walks at any convenient time.

However, keep in mind that restaurants, shops, and the museum ship "Gera" operate on their own individual schedules. Most establishments open around 10:00–11:00 AM and welcome guests until late in the evening.
