Aquarium GEOMAR

About

Located on the picturesque waterfront that adorns the city of Kiel, the GEOMAR Aquarium is a compact yet highly informative scientific and educational center. It serves as a "window" into the world of major science, showcasing the work of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Germany.

The core of the exhibition consists of inhabitants of the North and Baltic Seas, allowing guests to get acquainted with the local ecosystem. However, there is also space for more exotic species: separate tanks recreate tropical water conditions, striking in their bright colors and diverse life forms.

An interesting feature of the aquarium is its structure: it consists of one spacious room where several large and small tanks are placed. This design creates a cozy atmosphere and allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in studying the depths of the sea without being distracted by complex mazes of corridors.

What to Do

The main adventure at GEOMAR Aquarium is discovering the amazing biodiversity of aquatic worlds. Here you can see graceful seahorses, swift little sharks, peculiar flounders, and vibrant lionfish up close. Schools of herring and majestic rays gliding smoothly in their tanks make a special impression on visitors.

An absolute crowd favorite is the outdoor pool with live seals, located right on the waterfront. These inquisitive creatures often swim to the surface to greet passersby and visitors. Watching their play and habits is one of the most pleasant activities in Kiel.

Don't miss the chance to see the public seal feeding, which takes place daily at 10:00 and 14:30 (please note that on Fridays, feedings are closed to the public). During the summer season, the aquarium's program is often supplemented with special events and educational quests aimed at young ocean explorers.

Getting There

GEOMAR Aquarium is located at Düsternbrooker Weg 20, right on the picturesque waterfront of Kiel Harbor. Thanks to its central location, it is very easy to reach on foot, enjoying the sea breeze while walking through the city's port area.

If you plan to use public transport, bus routes along the Kiellinie embankment are most convenient. From Kiel Central Station, a taxi or bus ride will take no more than 5–10 minutes, making the site accessible even for those visiting the city for just a few hours.

For motorists, there are parking areas in the vicinity; however, on weekends and holidays, spaces on the waterfront fill up quickly. Navigation coordinates: 54.3299674, 10.1485086.

History & Facts

GEOMAR Aquarium is not just a tourist attraction, but a living showcase for one of the world's leading institutes of oceanography. It is part of the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, which was officially established in its modern form in 1987, although the scientific foundation here has been building for decades.

Marine research in Kiel has deep historical roots dating back to the 19th century. As early as 1870, the Prussian Commission for the Scientific Investigation of German Seas was founded here. Later, in 1902, the International Marine Research Laboratory began its work, laying the foundation for serious study of ocean physics and chemistry.

A major milestone was 1937, when the famous zoologist Adolf Remane founded the Kiel Institute of Oceanography. Despite the destruction during the mid-20th century, the institute was rebuilt and continued its vital work. In 2004, several structures merged to form the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences, significantly expanding the scale of fundamental research into the world's seas and oceans.

Time Needed

It usually takes from 30 minutes to one hour to view the entire exhibition at GEOMAR Aquarium. The facility is quite compact, which allows you to study the contents of all the tanks in detail without spending the whole day there.

If you want to catch the public seal feeding, it is recommended to arrive a little in advance. Watching these charming animals in the open-air pool is usually the most memorable part of the visit, so plan your time according to the feeding schedule.

Working Hours

GEOMAR Aquarium is open to visitors daily, seven days a week. Standard opening hours are from 9:00 to 18:00 Monday through Sunday.

When planning your visit, take into account the public seal feeding times, which are held at 10:00 and 14:30 every day except Friday. This is an excellent time to see the aquarium inhabitants at their most active.
