The park earned its noble name in honor of the great poet and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The famous German classicist visited Kassel many times, showing a particular interest in the local scientific collections. This historical connection gives the park a special intellectual charm, setting it apart from other natural areas that Germany is so famous for.

Today, this place consistently delights visitors with its tranquility and high-quality infrastructure. Goetheanlage is an important part of the city's green network and is within walking distance of other iconic sites, such as the Ottoneum Natural History Museum. With 24-hour access, the park remains open at any time, offering seclusion and a chance to enjoy nature within an urban environment.

What to Do

There is something for everyone in this park. Fans of relaxing holidays can enjoy walks along the well-kept alleys or have a small picnic on the emerald lawns with friends. It is the perfect place to temporarily forget the city noise, read a book in the shade of the trees, or watch the local birds.

For those who prefer active pastimes, Goetheanlage offers excellent opportunities for morning jogs, outdoor yoga, or a game of frisbee. The park is especially beautiful in the summer, when the flowerbeds bloom, and in the autumn, when the foliage turns golden, creating a magnificent backdrop for atmospheric photo shoots.

Since the park is located near the city’s cultural center, a visit here is easily combined with a trip to the Ottoneum museum, which houses the famous "Goethe's elephant" skeleton. An evening stroll through the park will give you a sense of peace, and its proximity to other famous parks, such as Karlsaue, allows you to create an extensive walking route through the most beautiful spots in Kassel.

Getting There

Reaching this green corner is easy, as it is located in the central part of the city at Herkulesstraße 95. If you prefer walking, the path from the main shopping street Königstraße or the Old Town Hall will take only about 10–15 minutes.

For those using public transport, the most convenient option is the trams and buses going to Friedrichsplatz square (routes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8). From the central station Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, you can take tram No. 1 or No. 4 in about 15 minutes, and then walk for another 5 minutes.

If you are traveling by car, follow Herkulesstraße from the city center. The park is also easily accessible by bicycle — Kassel's urban infrastructure is well-suited for cyclists. A taxi from the central part of the city will take you to the park entrance in just a few minutes.

History & Facts

The name of this place is inextricably linked to the name of the great German poet and thinker Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In the late 18th century, the poet showed a keen interest in Kassel's natural history collections. One of the most curious facts is that the famous "Goethe's elephant" — one of the world's first prepared skeletons of large mammals — was handed over to him for research in the neighboring Ottoneum building.

The Ottoneum itself, located nearby, is also a unique historical monument: built in the early 17th century, it became the first court theater in Germany and later turned into a museum. Goetheanlage fits naturally into the city's rich tradition of park art, established by the Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel.

As part of the green network of Kassel, the park reflects the spirit of the Enlightenment era, when science, literature, and nature were viewed as one. Even after significant destruction of the city in the 20th century, these park areas were carefully restored, preserving the connection across eras and the cultural heritage of Germany.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll through the shady alleys and relax for a bit on one of the benches, 30–60 minutes is usually enough. It is an excellent spot for a short break between visiting larger museum exhibitions.

If you plan to combine a visit to the park with a trip to the Ottoneum museum or a walk through Friedrichsplatz, we recommend allowing about 1.5–2 hours for this area. This will be enough time to enjoy the atmosphere and take beautiful photos without rushing.

Working Hours

One of the main advantages of this park is its accessibility. Goetheanlage is open to visitors 24 hours a day, daily.

  • Monday — Sunday: 24 hours a day

You can come here for an early dawn walk or enjoy the silence of the park late at night — admission is always free.
