Zoo am Rammelsberg

About

Located in the picturesque Wahlershausen district, Zoo am Rammelsberg is a charming private nature corner in the city of Kassel. This small but very heartfelt park specializes in small animals and offers guests the chance to meet more than 150 inhabitants of 60 different species. Germany is famous for its well-maintained parks, and this zoo is no exception: on an area of 2 hectares, local and exotic representatives of the fauna coexist harmoniously.

The main feature of this place is its accessibility and family-friendly character. Entry to the zoo is free, and its maintenance is supported by donations and the operation of a small cafe, where visitors can relax with a portion of ice cream or a cup of coffee. This is not just an animal exhibit, but a community space created with great love for nature at the foot of the eponymous Rammelsberg hill.

Here you can see an amazing variety: from elegant flamingos and curious alpacas to exotic reptiles and nimble monkeys. Thanks to its compactness and friendly atmosphere, the zoo has become a favorite place for walks for local residents and travelers seeking a quiet break away from the city bustle.

What to Do

The main pleasure of visiting this place lies in the possibility of close contact with animals. In the petting zone (Streichelzoo), children and adults can pet and feed friendly goats, miniature donkeys, or guinea pigs. Raccoons are particularly popular with visitors — watching their nimble paws and funny games always evokes a lot of positive emotions.

Bird lovers should visit the bird house (Vogelhaus), home to bright macaws, parrots, majestic peacocks, and graceful cranes. In the open-air enclosures, you can admire stately flamingos and emus, and in the "monkey house" (Affenhaus), you can observe the habits of capuchins, Javanese macaques, and white-faced sakis. For those interested in more mysterious creatures, there is a terrarium with pythons and iguanas, as well as an aquarium with fish.

A walk through the zoo is ideal for a quiet family holiday. You can feed the animals with special vegetables or noodles (after showing the food to the staff first), take colorful photos, or simply enjoy the silence by the enclosures. At the end of the visit, it's pleasant to stop by the local cafe for snacks or cold drinks before continuing your journey through Kassel.

Getting There

You can find Zoo am Rammelsberg in the quiet residential district of Wahlershausen, at Roterkopfweg 1. If you plan to travel by car, please note that the roads Am Rammelsberg and Roterkopfweg are quite narrow, and parking spaces are very limited. It is best to leave your car nearby and walk.

From the city center, it is most convenient to get there by public transport. Bus routes serving the Wahlershausen district are suitable, from which the walk to the zoo gates will take about 10–15 minutes. The path passes through a picturesque area next to a gardening community, which itself sets a peaceful mood.

For those who prefer active travel, cycling or walking is an excellent option, as the zoo is located in a green zone at the foot of the hill. A taxi ride from the central station or the city's main tourist spots will take no more than 20–30 minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this cozy nature spot began in March 1974. It was founded by Horst Schwenk, who decided to create a small private zoo in the Wahlershausen district, focused on a close encounter with the world of small animals. From the very beginning, the project developed as a family business, maintaining a warm and trusting atmosphere.

Since 1999, the leadership passed to the second generation of the family — Thomas and Monika Schwenk. Under their management, the collection of inhabitants has expanded significantly, and the territory has been transformed, while maintaining its status as a free-to-visit site that exists mainly through voluntary donations and the love of the city's residents.

A significant event in the zoo's history was 2012, when the Schwenk family was awarded the Letter of Honor from the State of Hesse (Ehrenbrief des Landes Hessen). This award was recognition of their outstanding contribution to the development of the region and educational activities in the field of nature conservation. Today, the zoo remains a rare example of a private initiative that has been bringing joy to locals and tourists for decades.

Time Needed

Despite the variety of species, Zoo am Rammelsberg is a fairly compact and cozy place covering about 2 hectares. For a typical visitor, 1–2 hours is quite enough for a leisurely tour of all the enclosures, the aquarium, and the bird house.

If you are planning a family visit, we recommend setting aside at least two hours. Children will surely want to stay longer in the petting area or watch the funny games of the raccoons and monkeys. This is an ideal place for a short but fulfilling walk that does not cause fatigue.

Working Hours

When planning your visit, please pay attention to the opening hours. The zoo is always closed on Mondays. On weekdays (Tuesday – Friday), the doors are open from 14:00 to 18:00. On Saturday and Sunday, the opening hours are extended, and visitors are welcome from 10:00 to 18:00.

Please note that the indicated hours are valid for the season from March to October. During the winter months, the schedule may change or the zoo may go on a break, so it is worth checking the information in advance during the cold season.
