Skaros, also known as Skaros Rock, is a majestic rocky headland and one of the most iconic natural landmarks of the island of Santorini in Greece. It is located in the picturesque area of Imerovigli, near the island's administrative center — the town of Fira. At one time, Skaros was a vital strategic point and the heart of medieval life on the island.

In former times, a powerful Venetian fortress known as Skaros Castle stood atop the rock. It was the most significant fortification on Santorini, serving as the island's capital and a reliable defense against pirate raids. Unfortunately, a series of devastating earthquakes in the 17th to 19th centuries led to the gradual destruction of the castle, and today only picturesque ruins remain of its former glory, serving as a reminder of its rich past.
Despite the loss of the fortress, Skaros has not lost its appeal. Today, it is one of the most popular spots to admire breathtaking panoramas of the Aegean Sea, the famous Santorini caldera, the whitewashed town of Imerovigli, and the surrounding volcanic islands. A walk to the top rewards you not only with stunning views but also with the opportunity to touch history. The only well-preserved structure on the rock, besides fragments of the fortress walls, is the charming Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Theoskepasti), tucked away at the foot of the rock on the seaside and open to visitors.
