History & Facts

The history of this site is rooted in deep antiquity, dating back to when the first major settlements began to form in what is now Greece. Although the current fortifications belong to later eras, the first traces of human presence on Kastro Hill date back to the third millennium BC. The city of Patras was officially founded in the 6th century BC by Spartan Achaeans and named after their legendary leader, Patreus.

During the period of Roman rule, the city gained the status of a major Mediterranean port, especially following the decline of Corinth. The Romans appreciated the strategic position of the hill, laying the foundations for future defensive structures that were later rebuilt and expanded by the Byzantines.

The medieval period left a significant mark on the fortress's appearance. According to historical chronicles, in 1320, the Frankish castle of St. George, which was part of this fortification system, was handed over to the Greeks by the castellan Nicolas of Patras. This event was a major milestone in the struggle for control over the Peloponnese, reflecting the region's volatile political destiny.
