Venetian Castle of Bohali

About

Atop the forested Bohali Hill, offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, stands the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos. This ancient fortress is one of the most important historical monuments that hospitable Greece has to offer. Built on the site of an ancient acropolis, it served as a reliable shield for the local residents for centuries.

Today, the castle consists of majestic ruins that preserve the spirit of the Venetian era. The main symbol of the fortress remains its monumental gates, decorated with a bas-relief of the Winged Lion of Saint Mark. Walking along the massive walls, one can sense the scale of the fortification mastery of those years and imagine how life once bustled within the medieval city of Zakynthos.

This place attracts not only history buffs but also beauty seekers: the panoramic views of the port and the bay from the bastions are considered some of the best on the island. Bohali Castle is not just an open-air museum, but a true time machine, transporting visitors to the era of knights and sea battles.

What to Do

The first thing to do upon visiting is to take a leisurely walk around the perimeter of the fortress walls. Pay attention to the Grimani Bastion, which today serves as a magnificent observation deck. From here, you can enjoy classic postcard views of the harbor and the endless blue of the sea—the perfect moment for panoramic photography.

Detail-oriented visitors will enjoy finding the surviving Venetian coats of arms and studying the design of the embrasures that once protected the island from pirates. Inside the grounds, you can see the foundations of ancient churches and gunpowder magazines, immersing yourself in the atmosphere of a military camp from past centuries.

The best way to conclude your visit to the fortress is in the village of Bohali itself. Right nearby is the Maritime Museum of the Seven Islands, where exhibits tell the story of seafaring in this region. After your cultural program, be sure to stop by one of the local cafes: it is customary here to drink coffee while watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon, painting the castle walls in warm hues.

Getting There

There are several ways to reach this historical monument. The most scenic option is a walk from the center of the capital. The route up through the winding, narrow streets of the Bohali district takes about 20–30 minutes. It is an excellent opportunity to see the authentic architecture of the residential neighborhoods and enjoy the gradually unfolding panoramas of the port.

If you prefer comfort or are short on time, you can take a taxi or use a rental car. The drive from the port or the central square takes only 10–15 minutes. The distance from the island's airport is about 8 kilometers. For those arriving in their own vehicle, parking is available at the foot of the hill.

Public buses also run to the Bohali district from the city center, stopping near the ascent to the castle. However, keep in mind that schedules may change depending on the season, so walking or taking a taxi remain the most reliable ways to reach the fortress gates.

History & Facts

The history of this site is rooted in deep antiquity. Long before the arrival of the Venetians, the ancient Greek acropolis of Psofis stood here. Unfortunately, the ancient structures were almost entirely destroyed by subsequent rulers, who used the stones of the ancient temples to build new fortifications.

The current appearance of the fortress began to take shape in the 12th century, though large-scale works were not completed until 1646. The castle has survived many tragic events: in 1480, it was seriously damaged by Ottoman raids, and in 1515, a significant portion of the walls was destroyed by a powerful earthquake.

For centuries, the castle served as the island's administrative and defensive center, protecting residents from pirate attacks. Venetian rule, which lasted over 300 years, left a profound mark not only on the architecture of the fortress but also on the culture of the entire region. Despite the devastating earthquake of 1953, the castle remains the primary witness to the island's medieval grandeur.

Time Needed

A thorough exploration of the castle ruins and a walk along its walls usually takes 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to study the surviving bastions, examine the Venetian bas-reliefs, and take memorable photos from the observation decks.

If you plan to round out your visit with a stroll through the Bohali district itself, a visit to the Maritime Museum, and a break at one of the local cafes, you should set aside half a day for the trip. Many tourists prefer to arrive closer to the evening to catch the "golden hour" and watch as the city at the foot of the hill begins to glow with lights.

Working Hours

Opening hours on other days: from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). It is recommended to arrive no later than 2:00 PM to have enough time to explore the entire grounds before the gates close.
