If you are travelling from the mountain region, the journey from Quetzaltenango will take just an hour and a half, during which you will drive approximately 50 kilometres along a scenic road amidst tropical vegetation.

For travellers arriving from the direction of Mexico, Tapachula serves as a convenient starting point. The trip, spanning about 90 kilometres, usually lasts from 2 to 3 hours, taking border formalities into account. Most intercity services arrive at the main bus station in Retalhuleu, located in zone one of the city, from where it is easy to reach the centre by taxi or tuk-tuk.

A car trip from Guatemala City via the CA-2 highway usually takes about 4–5 hours, during which you will cover a distance of 190 kilometres, observing the changing natural landscapes. If you are making your way from mountainous Quetzaltenango, the road will be significantly shorter and more picturesque: a steep descent along a serpentine road of 50 kilometres will take just an hour to an hour and a half.

Travel Tips

A trip to Retalhuleu promises a wealth of vivid impressions, however, as with any journey, proper preparation is important. To ensure your holiday in this sunny region of Guatemala is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have gathered several useful recommendations.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate here is hot and humid year-round, so opt for light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring headwear, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. Also, do not forget comfortable walking shoes and swimming attire for visiting the water parks.
  2. Transport. For movement within the city, it is most convenient and culturally interesting to use auto-rickshaws, known as "tuk-tuks". This is a fast and affordable way to get to the desired location, but it is strongly recommended to agree on the fare with the driver in advance, before boarding.
  3. Finances. The local currency is the Quetzal. Major hotels and famous amusement parks accept cards without issues, but for purchases at markets, small cafes, and paying for transport, you will definitely need small cash denominations. It is safest to exchange currency at official banks, avoiding street money changers.
  4. Health and Safety. Drink only bottled water and avoid drinks with ice at street stalls to prevent stomach issues. Since the region is tropical, be sure to use mosquito repellent, especially in the evening. Regarding safety, do not carry large sums of money and avoid unlit streets after dark.
  5. Communication. The main language of communication is Spanish. English is not understood everywhere, mostly only by staff at large tourist complexes. It is recommended to download an offline translator or learn a few basic phrases — locals greatly appreciate guests' attempts to speak their language.
  6. Local Etiquette. Guatemalans are a polite and welcoming people. It is customary to greet others (saying "Buenos días" or "Buenas tardes") when entering a shop, restaurant, or boarding transport. If you wish to photograph local residents, always ask for permission first.
  7. What to Avoid. Try not to display expensive camera equipment, smartphones, and jewellery on the street so as not to attract undue attention from pickpockets. Also, refrain from buying pre-cut fruit from street vendors if you are unsure of the hygiene of their preparation.
  8. Time Planning. The city is known for its world-class amusement parks (such as Xetulul and Xocomil). If you plan to visit them, try to arrive right at opening time, especially on weekends. This will help avoid long queues for attractions and allow you to secure comfortable sun loungers in the shade.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid minor troubles and fully focus on relaxation and entertainment. May your acquaintance with the "capital of the world" (as locals jokingly call this city due to its hot climate) leave only the warmest memories.
