What to Do

At Bjargarsteinn Mathús, guests can expect more than just a meal; it's a true immersion into Icelandic traditions. The menu features fresh seafood, succulent lamb, and original vegetarian dishes. Be sure to try the "dish of the day," which the chef prepares from the morning catch of local fishermen.

One of the main highlights of the visit is the opportunity to watch the changing colors over the iconic Kirkjufell mountain right during your meal. This creates the perfect backdrop for both a romantic evening and a peaceful family dinner in the cozy atmosphere of the old house.

A carefully selected wine list and local beer will complement your gastronomic experience. The attentive staff is always ready to share the story of each ingredient, making your experience even more personalized and warm.

History & Facts

The building that houses Bjargarsteinn Mathús today has a fascinating and long history. It was originally built as a residence in 1908 in the town of Akranes. For a whole century, until 2008, the house served as a cozy shelter for local residents until the land beneath it was needed by the church for a parking lot.

Instead of demolishing the historic structure, the company S.Ó. Húsbyggingar decided to save it. During a complex engineering operation, the house was transported 140 kilometers — first to Borgarnes for careful restoration, and then, in December 2014, it arrived at its current location on the coast in Grundarfjörður.

The restaurant's official opening took place on July 31, 2015. Today, guests can enjoy a meal within walls that hold more than a century of history, successfully integrated into a modern gastronomic context.

Time Needed
