General Weather Overview

The climate of Agra, located in India, is subtropical semi-arid. It is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year: very hot summers are followed by pleasant, cool winters. Clear and sunny weather prevails for most of the year, with the exception of the monsoon rain period.

There are three distinct seasons in Agra. From March to June, the hot and dry season prevails, with the peak heat occurring in May and June, when average maximum temperatures can reach 38-39°C. From July to September comes the long-awaited monsoon season, which brings the bulk of the annual rainfall and increased humidity, but somewhat softens the daytime heat. The period from October to February is a comfortable winter with pleasant daytime temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it the ideal time to explore the city.

Temperature

The annual temperature trend in Agra shows significant contrasts. The hottest months are undoubtedly May and June. In May, the average maximum temperature reaches 39.0°C, and in June, the warmest month, the average temperature is around 33.6°C, with daytime highs often exceeding 38°C. Conversely, January is considered the coldest month, when the average temperature drops to 13.8°C, and nightly lows can reach 7.8°C, creating a noticeable chill.

The summer period in Agra, spanning the months from March to June, is characterized by intensifying heat. By April, the average maximum temperature rises to 37.2°C, and in May it peaks at 39.0°C. During these months, the air remains predominantly dry, creating a sensation of dry heat. With the arrival of June, the heat persists (average maximum 38.6°C), but the approach of the monsoon begins to be felt, which may be accompanied by some increase in humidity before the onset of heavy rains in July.

Winter in Agra, from October to February, offers much more comfortable temperature conditions for travellers. Daytime temperatures during this period usually range from a pleasant 20°C to 28°C, especially in November (average maximum 27.6°C) and February (average maximum 24.7°C). December and January are the coolest winter months, with average daytime highs around 20-22°C and night temperatures dropping to 7.8-9.4°C. Agra is characterized by noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations, especially during the dry seasons (winter and the hot dry period before the monsoon), when the difference between day and night readings can be 12-15°C.

Rainfall

Precipitation in Agra has a distinctly seasonal character, with a clear division into a wet monsoon period and a long dry season. The bulk of the annual rainfall occurs within a few months, while during the rest of the year, rain is a rare occurrence, sometimes absent altogether.

The rainy season in Agra usually falls between July and September, reaching its peak in July and August. These months see the highest amount of precipitation — an average of 7 mm monthly. July is the wettest month in terms of rainfall frequency, counting an average of 23 rainy days, with August following with 21 rainy days. September also remains quite wet with 5 mm of rainfall and 16 rainy days. June, with 2 mm of rainfall and 8 rainy days, can be considered a transitional month to the monsoon season. Rains during this period often take the form of intense downpours typical of a monsoon climate.

The dry season in Agra covers most of the year. Particularly arid are February, April, November, and December, when the average rainfall is 0 mm. There are extremely few rainy days in these months: just one each in November and December, two in February, and three in April. In January, March, May, and October, a very insignificant amount of precipitation also falls (about 1 mm in each of these months), and it rains infrequently, from 2 to 5 days per month. During these periods, clear and sunny weather prevails in Agra.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Agra, it is important to consider its diverse climate. During the hot season, which lasts roughly from March to June, when daytime temperatures can rise to 37-39°C, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream for protection against the intense sun. Since you will be doing a lot of walking while sightseeing, comfortable shoes are an absolute necessity at any time of the year.

From July to September, the monsoon season arrives in Agra, bringing significant rainfall, especially in July and August (up to 23 rainy days per month). During this period, it is worth taking a light umbrella or raincoat, as well as clothes and shoes that dry quickly. From October to February, the weather becomes significantly cooler and more pleasant. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, but evenings and nights, especially in December and January (minimum temperatures around 8-9°C), can be chilly. Therefore, the principle of layering is recommended: bring t-shirts, light jumpers, as well as a sweater or jacket to be ready for temperature changes throughout the day.
