General Weather Overview

The climate in Imphal can be described as humid subtropical, yet surprisingly mild and pleasant for travellers. Unlike many of India's lowland regions, scorching heat is rare here: even in the warmest months, the average temperature stays within a comfortable +23...+24°C. The weather is stable, without sudden temperature spikes, creating favourable conditions for exploring the city at any time of year.

The most distinct feature of the local climate is the monsoon season. From May right through to September or October, the city comes under the influence of the rains. In the peak summer months, such as July and August, rainfall can occur almost daily (up to 29 rainy days per month), filling the surrounding nature with lush greenery, but requiring tourists to carry an umbrella and waterproof footwear.

The winter period, from November to February, conversely, delights with dry and clear weather. This is a "quiet" time when rains practically cease, and the air becomes fresh and cool. During the day, temperatures remain pleasant for walking, however, at night the thermometer can drop to +7...+9°C, so travellers should include warm clothing in their wardrobe for the evenings.

Temperature

Imphal is distinguished by a pleasant and moderate climate, avoiding the extreme temperature fluctuations typical of many other regions in India. The annual temperature range is quite comfortable for travellers: averages shift smoothly from a cool 13.5°C in January to a warm 23.8°C in July. January is traditionally the coldest month, when the minimum temperature can drop to 7.5°C, although severe cold or frost is virtually non-existent here.

The summer season and the monsoon period, lasting from May to September, are characterized by stable warmth without exhausting heat. During this time, the average air temperature hovers around 23–24°C, and daily highs rarely exceed the 27°C mark. Such weather, combined with high cloud cover, creates mild conditions for sightseeing, although one should be prepared for nights remaining quite warm during this period, around 20–21°C.

The winter months, especially December and January, bring the most noticeable fluctuations between day and night temperatures. While the sun warms the air to a pleasant 19–20°C during the day, it becomes noticeably fresh after sunset, and the thermometer drops to 7–9°C. Unlike winter, the daily amplitude in summer is minimal, amounting to only about 5–6 degrees, creating a consistent temperature background throughout the day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Imphal is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming distinct dry and wet seasons. Winter and early spring are the driest times to visit the region. From November to March, rain falls extremely rarely: the average rainfall in these months is minimal (about 0–1 mm), and the number of rainy days varies from 3 to 7. January is considered the driest month, ideal for long walks in the fresh air.

The picture changes dramatically with the arrival of the monsoon season. Starting from May, the frequency of precipitation grows rapidly. The wettest months are June, July, and August, when it rains almost daily — statistics show up to 28–29 rainy days per month. During this period, the sky is often overcast with clouds, and high humidity becomes a constant companion for travellers.

By October, the rainy season begins to recede: the number of wet days decreases to 16, and by November the weather stabilizes completely. April is also a transitional month when rainfall amounts are still low, but the number of rainy days becomes noticeably higher (around 13), heralding the imminent start of the wet season.

What to Pack

The climate in Imphal is characterized by mildness, so extreme heat is usually not an issue here, yet the weather has distinct seasonality. If your trip is planned for the dry and cool period from November to February, when night temperatures can drop to +7°C, be sure to take warm clothes with you. A light jacket, jumper, and closed shoes will be necessary for comfortable evening walks, and the principle of layering will help you easily adapt to temperature changes between the sunny day and the cool evening.

From May to September, the city is under the sway of the rainy season: during this time, the number of days with precipitation can reach 28–29 per month. For a trip during this period, it is critical to pack a reliable umbrella, a high-quality raincoat, and possibly a waterproof cover for your backpack. It is better to choose clothes made of quick-drying fabrics, as things can remain damp for a long time due to high humidity. Waterproof shoes with non-slip soles will become your best ally on wet roads.

In the spring and summer months, when the air warms up to +26...+27°C during the day, you will find light and loose clothing made of breathable materials useful. Despite frequent cloud cover in the monsoon season, do not neglect sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are mandatory for long walks. Also, given the specifics of the region, it is recommended to have comfortable, broken-in shoes for excursions around the picturesque surroundings of Imphal.
