General Weather Overview
The climate in Jammu is characterised as subtropical, with distinctly defined seasons. The city experiences a hot summer, a period of frequent rainfall in mid-summer, and a relatively cool, dry winter, resulting in diverse weather conditions throughout the year.
The summer months, particularly from April to June, are distinguished by high temperatures: average maximum values often exceed 30°C, and on the hottest days, they can reach 35-37°C. July and August bring to Jammu the period with the highest number of rainy days in the year (26 and 25 days respectively) and the maximum precipitation figures for this region, although not excessively high (11 mm and 8 mm). During this time, the air temperature drops slightly, but humidity increases significantly. Autumn, covering September, October, and November, brings a gradual decrease in temperature and a reduction in rainfall. Winter, from December to February, is the coolest season with mild daytime temperatures and cool nights, while precipitation during this period is minimal.
Therefore, travellers planning a trip to Jammu should be prepared for significant weather changes throughout the year. From April to June, very hot and predominantly dry weather is expected. July and August are characterised by frequent, though usually not heavy, rains and high humidity. Autumn and winter offer more moderate and dry weather conditions, with cool nights, especially in December and January.
Temperature
The climate in Jammu is characterised by significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. Throughout the year, the thermometer moves from cool winter months to a sweltering summer. The hottest month is usually June, when the average temperature reaches 30.2°C, and daytime highs can rise to 36.9°C. May is also distinguished by high temperatures, with an average temperature of 27.9°C and maximum values around 35.8°C. The coldest period is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 10.9°C and minimum nightly temperatures dropping on average to 4.9°C. December is also cool, with an average value of 12.2°C.
The summer months in Jammu, especially from May to June, bring intense heat. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, and at the peak of the season, they can approach 37°C. July and August remain hot, with average temperatures around 29°C and 28.3°C respectively; however, these months see a higher amount of precipitation, which can affect the perceived temperature. Transitional seasons, such as April (average temperature 23.8°C) and October (average temperature 22.6°C), offer more moderate weather, although even in these months the difference between day and night temperatures can be substantial – for example, in April the daytime maximum is 31.6°C, and the nightly minimum is 16.0°C.
Winter in Jammu is mild and cool. In January and December, average daytime highs range from 16.8°C to 19.0°C, while nights can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to 4.9°C - 5.5°C. Frosts occur infrequently, but the cool weather is distinctly felt. A characteristic feature for many months, especially for spring and autumn, is the noticeable difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. For instance, in March, the average maximum is 25.7°C, and the minimum is 11.5°C, indicating significant cooling of the air after sunset.
Precipitation
In the city of Jammu, a clearly defined seasonality in the distribution of precipitation is observed throughout the year. A wet season is clearly traceable, peaking in mid-summer, along with several dry periods covering the autumn months, early winter, and late spring.
The greatest amount of precipitation falls in July and August, which are the wettest months. In July, an average of 11 mm of precipitation is recorded, with rains occurring very frequently – about 26 days per month. August follows with a figure of 8 mm of precipitation and approximately 25 rainy days. During these summer months, precipitation likely takes the form of intense showers typical of monsoon influence. June (4 mm, 10 rainy days) and September (3 mm, 15 rainy days) can be considered transitional months, when the amount of precipitation and frequency of rains increase before the rainy season and decrease after it, respectively.
The driest months in Jammu are May, October, November, and December, when the average monthly precipitation is only 1 mm. At the same time, October and December count only about 3 rainy days, and November about 4. Interestingly, in May, despite the minimal amount of precipitation (1 mm), there can be up to 8 days with precipitation, indicating very light and possibly brief rains. In other months, such as January (4 mm, 8 days), February (3 mm, 6 days), March (3 mm, 8 days), and April (2 mm, 7 days), the amount of precipitation is also small, and it most likely falls in the form of light rain or drizzle.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Jammu, it is important to consider significant seasonal weather fluctuations to pack your suitcase correctly. In general, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion at any time of the year, as you will surely want to explore the city and its surroundings. From December to February, it is quite cool here: the average temperature hovers around 10-14°C, and at night it can drop to 5°C. During this period, be sure to take warm clothes with you: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a mid-season jacket, warm trousers, and socks. Although heavy rains usually do not occur in winter (precipitation around 1-4 mm), a few overcast and slightly rainy days are quite possible, so a light windbreaker or a compact umbrella will not go amiss.
Spring (March-May) brings significant warming: the temperature rises from 18°C to almost 28°C on average, and daytime highs in May can exceed 35°C. Summer (June-September) in Jammu is hot and humid. June is the hottest month with an average temperature of around 30°C. July and August are characterised by the highest amount of precipitation (up to 11 mm) and the maximum number of rainy days (up to 25-26 per month), indicating the monsoon season. In these months, light, breathable clothing made of cotton or linen is absolutely necessary, as well as a reliable umbrella or raincoat. Do not forget sunscreen with high SPF and a hat, especially from spring to autumn. In autumn (October-November), the weather becomes milder, the temperature drops to a comfortable 17-23°C, and precipitation is minimal.
Given the temperature changes between day and evening, especially in the transitional seasons (spring and autumn), as well as the difference between sunny and rainy days, it is recommended to adhere to the principle of layering in clothing. This will allow you to easily adapt to changing conditions. For example, a light t-shirt over which you can throw a shirt or cardigan, and if necessary – a windbreaker. Sunglasses will also come in handy for protection from the sun. Regardless of the season, keep a small first aid kit with basic medications with you.
