This beach, also known as the Vellayil district coast, is famous for its pristine atmosphere and lush tropical greenery. Tall palms grow almost to the water's edge, providing natural shade and a perfect backdrop for photos. Unlike the central city beaches, a more peaceful atmosphere reigns here, making it a favorite spot for locals to take a walk.

Toppayil Beach is considered a true hidden gem of the Malabar Coast. It is valued for its cleanliness, open horizons, and the chance to experience the authentic Kerala lifestyle, watching rare fishing boats on the horizon or listening to the sound of the surf in silence.

What to Do

The main charm of this place lies in the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the moment. Visitors often come here for morning runs or evening promenades, when the sea breeze brings welcome coolness. The gentle swell of the waves makes the shoreline suitable for safe swimming, and the wide sandy strip is perfect for outdoor yoga sessions.

One of the highlights of a visit can be wildlife watching: if you're lucky, you can spot dolphins playing in the waters of the Arabian Sea on the horizon. For food lovers, there are stalls with local street food near the beach approaches, where you should definitely try spiced roasted peanuts or fresh seafood prepared in the traditional Kerala style.

With its abundance of palm trees and beautiful views, the beach has become a popular spot for photoshoots, especially during the "golden hour" before sunset. Families often choose this spot for quiet picnics. And if you want to add a cultural program to your holiday, the magnificent Hindu shrines, such as the ancient Thali Mahadeva temple, are located just a few kilometers away.

Getting There

Reaching the coast is easy, as the site is located just 5–7 kilometers from the city center. The most popular and convenient way for tourists to get around is by auto-rickshaw or taxi, which will take you along the scenic Beach Rd directly to the Vellayil district.

If you prefer public transport, city buses run regularly along the coast. The nearest major railway station, Kozhikode Main, is located about 8 kilometers away, and you can easily reach it by local transport in 15–20 minutes.

For those arriving by air, Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ) is approximately 30 kilometers away. A taxi ride from the airport takes 40 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Please note that finding a free rickshaw at the beach itself can be more difficult in the evening, so it’s worth arranging a transfer in advance or using taxi apps.

History & Facts

This coastline is inextricably linked to the rich past of the city of Kozhikode, which was known in ancient times as Calicut. As a key port on the Malabar Coast, this region was mentioned in chronicles as early as the Sangam era. Arab merchants traded actively here from the 7th century, and later, in the 15th century, the legendary fleet of Chinese Admiral Zheng He visited these waters.

The main historical milestone of these parts is 1498, when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed on Indian shores. Although the landing site itself, Kappad Beach, is located slightly to the north, the entire coastline, including modern-day Toppayil Beach, was part of that very "Spice Coast" that changed the course of world history and opened the Age of Discovery.

In the Middle Ages, the city flourished as a cosmopolitan center where Hindu communities, Muslim traders, and foreign guests coexisted peacefully. It was here that the production of the famous cotton fabric—calico—which was exported all over the world, originated. Walking along the golden sand today, one can easily imagine how the sails of merchant ships from all over the world once appeared on the horizon.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the atmosphere of this place, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This time is enough for a leisurely walk along the water's edge, a few memorable photos, and contemplating the sea horizon.

If you plan to have a small family picnic in the shade of the palms or want to wait for the famous tropical sunset, it's worth scheduling about 3 hours. Meditation and morning yoga enthusiasts often spend the entire morning here, enjoying the peace before the main crowds of vacationers arrive.

Working Hours

Toppayil Beach is open 24/7 every day of the week, including holidays. This allows guests to come here at dawn for meditation or late in the evening to listen to the sound of the sea at night.

Despite the round-the-clock access, the most comfortable times for relaxation are between 6:00 and 10:00 AM and from 4:30 PM until dusk, when the sun is not too intense and the air temperature becomes most pleasant.
