Overview

The climate in Lahaul can be described as harsh high-altitude or alpine, which is typical for Himalayan regions. The weather here is characterized by sharp contrasts: very long, freezing winters and short, cool summers. Travelers should be prepared for significant temperature fluctuations and cold weather almost any time of year.

The year in Lahaul is clearly divided into two main seasons. A long and harsh winter lasts from approximately October to May. During this time, average temperatures stay consistently well below freezing, often dropping to -15°C or even -20°C. A short and cool summer occurs in July and August, when temperatures turn positive, though maximum values rarely exceed +12°C. Transitional months, such as June and September, also remain very cold.

One of the key features of the local climate is the precipitation pattern. Although the total amount is low, the summer months, especially July and August, stand out with a higher number of rainy days. This indicates frequent but usually light precipitation, which is important to consider when planning treks and other outdoor activities.

Temperature

The climate in Lahaul is characterized by harsh conditions and extreme temperatures year-round, which is typical for high-altitude regions. The annual temperature cycle here is very pronounced. The coldest months are December and January, when the average temperature drops to -17°C...-18°C, and night frosts can reach -23°C or lower. The warmest period falls in July and August, but even then the weather remains cool: the average temperature hovers around +7°C, and daytime highs rarely exceed +12°C.

Winter in Lahaul is long and freezing. From November to April, average temperatures stay consistently well below zero. Summer, by contrast, is short and cool—only in June does the average temperature move into positive territory. Lahaul's climate is characterized by significant diurnal temperature fluctuations. The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows is often 10-15 degrees. This means that even on relatively warm summer days, nights remain very cold, with temperatures near freezing. Transitional seasons, spring and autumn, are also cold, with rapid temperature changes and persistent nighttime frosts.

Precipitation

The climate in Lahaul is characterized by low precipitation throughout the year, typical of high-altitude arid regions. Due to the prevailing sub-zero temperatures for most of the year, especially from October to May, any precipitation falls as snow. The total amount of moisture is low, making this region one of the driest in the country.

Despite the overall dryness, there is a relative wet season during the summer months. Precipitation is most frequent in July and August—with an average of 20-21 days with precipitation in each of these months. The peak in moisture levels occurs in July and September, amounting to about 5 mm. During this short summer period, precipitation can fall as rain, but its intensity is generally low.

The driest period in Lahaul occurs in autumn. October and November are the months with the least precipitation (only 1 mm) and the minimum number of wet days (5-6 days). Winter, though snowy, also features a small volume of precipitation: 3-4 mm falls in January and February, but the number of snowy days reaches 13-14 per month.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Lahaul, it’s important to remember that you are heading to a high-altitude region with a harsh and cold climate year-round. Layering should be the foundation of your wardrobe. Even in the warmest summer months, July and August, the average temperature barely exceeds +7°C, and nights remain cold. Be sure to pack thermal underwear (base layer), warm fleece or down sweaters (mid-layer), and a high-quality windproof and waterproof jacket (outer layer). Pants should also be insulated and preferably waterproof, especially since precipitation is possible even in summer.

Regardless of the season, your luggage should include warm accessories: a wool or fleece hat, a scarf or buff, and high-quality gloves or mittens. Pay special attention to footwear—it should be durable, waterproof, insulated, and have a non-slip sole; trekking boots are ideal. Due to the high altitude, solar radiation here is very strong, so sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and lip balm are absolutely essential even in cloudy weather. The winter months, from December to March, feature extremely low temperatures dropping below -20°C, requiring even more serious gear, including arctic-grade down jackets and specialized clothing for severe frost.
