This enormous pond is closely linked to one of Madurai's main sanctuaries—the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. Mariamman Teppakulam plays a key role in many of the city's religious ceremonies and festivals, becoming a focal point for both believers and curious tourists. Its scale and the calm surface of the water create a special, peaceful atmosphere.
The reservoir gains particular importance during the annual Teppotsavam (Float Festival), as well as during the celebration of the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar (an incarnation of Shiva). During these times, the tank is filled with water, and colorful rituals featuring decorated boats and images of deities are held on its surface, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
