General Weather Conditions

The climate of Tezpur can be described as humid subtropical, making the city attractive to visit, albeit with certain seasonal nuances. Overall, the weather here remains warm and comfortable for most of the year: even in the coolest months, temperatures rarely drop to uncomfortable levels, and the summer heat is often softened by cloud cover.

There is a clear division between the dry and wet seasons throughout the year. Winter, beginning in November and lasting until February, delights travellers with mild and sunny weather with minimal rainfall — this is the ideal time for long walks and excursions. Starting in April, the number of rainy days increases sharply, reaching its peak in the summer months when precipitation can occur almost daily.

A distinctive feature of the local climate is the relative stability of the temperature regime without extreme fluctuations. During the summer period, from June to September, the air warms up to an average of 28–31°C, but high humidity and frequent rains are constant companions of this season. Tourists planning a trip in summer should be prepared for sunny days alternating with overcast skies and should definitely bring an umbrella.

Temperature

The climate in Tezpur is characterized by a fairly mild temperature regime without extreme frosts, although seasonality is clearly expressed here. The annual temperature cycle shifts smoothly from a cool winter to a hot summer. The coldest month is traditionally January with an average temperature of about +17.5°C, while the peak heat occurs in August, when average figures reach +28.8°C. This makes the city accessible for visits year-round, although your choice of clothing will depend heavily on the season.

The summer period, which lasts here from May to September, is distinguished by consistently high temperatures. During this time, the air usually warms up to +30°C — +31.5°C during the day. A characteristic feature of the local summer is the insignificant temperature drop throughout the day: nights remain very warm and stifling, with figures around +26°C, which brings practically no relief after sunset.

Winter in Tezpur, on the contrary, offers the most comfortable conditions for travellers who prefer moderate warmth. From December to February, the daytime weather is pleasant with highs in the region of +23°C — +24°C. However, it is during the winter months that the greatest difference between day and night temperatures is observed. After sunset, the air cools quickly, and at night the thermometer can drop to +11°C — +13°C, so warm clothing will definitely be required for evening walks.

Rainfall

Precipitation in Tezpur is distributed unevenly throughout the year, clearly dividing the calendar into a dry season and a monsoon period. Since the air temperature remains above freezing even in winter, precipitation here falls exclusively as rain. Travellers should be prepared for the fact that in summer, humidity and the frequency of rainfall increase significantly, while the winter months delight with clear and dry weather.

The rainiest period falls during the summer months and early autumn. From June to August, it rains very frequently: statistics show that in July, precipitation can be observed almost daily — up to 30 days in the month. May and September are also characterized by high humidity, with 25–26 rainy days. At this time of year, an umbrella and a raincoat will become your indispensable companions, although the rains themselves may not be too heavy in terms of water volume.

The most favourable time for those who prefer dry weather begins in November and lasts until February. In these months, the probability of getting caught in the rain is minimal: in November, December, and January, the amount of precipitation tends towards zero, and the number of rainy days is only between 2 and 4 for the entire month. This makes the winter period ideal for outdoor sightseeing.

What to Pack

A trip to Tezpur requires a thoughtful approach to your wardrobe, especially if your journey falls during the summer season or early autumn. From May to September, hot weather sets in with daytime temperatures around +30°C, accompanied by high humidity and frequent rainfall. During this period, it can rain almost daily (up to 30 rainy days in July!), so be sure to pack a high-quality raincoat, a sturdy umbrella, and quick-drying clothes made from light natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen.

The winter months, from November to February, delight tourists with a more comfortable and dry climate. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant +19...+22°C, but at night the temperature can drop to +12°C. For this time of year, it is best to use the layering principle: bring t-shirts, and wear a light jumper, windbreaker, or thick cardigan over them, which can be easily removed when the sun starts to warm things up. Rain is extremely rare in winter, so heavy rain protection is unlikely to be needed.

Regardless of the season, for walking around the city and its surroundings, you will need comfortable shoes with flat soles, preferably closed-toe and well-broken-in. Also, do not forget about sun protection: even on cloudy days, UV radiation in India is quite active, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat will become your faithful companions. In the rainy season, we also recommend taking care of waterproof cases for your gadgets and documents.
