The main feature of the temple is the deity to which it is dedicated. This is Lord Vishnu in his rare avatar of Varaha Narasimha—a form that combines aspects of Varaha (the boar) and Narasimha (the man-lion). According to legend, Vishnu appeared in this form to save his devotee Prahlada. For most of the year, the statue of the deity is completely covered in sandalwood paste, and its true form can only be seen once a year during the Akshaya Tritiya festival.
Built in the 13th century, the temple is a magnificent example of the Kalinga architectural style. It rises majestically on a hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surroundings. Beyond its spiritual value, Simhachalam Temple is an important cultural and historical monument that provides a deeper understanding of the region's traditions and beliefs.
